Today we will talk about American Airlines and its flights to equator, but more exactly of the planes that this important North American airline uses for its flights to Quito and Guayaquil.

American Airlines suspends the Dallas route – quit since august 2018: www.nlarenas.com/2018/03/american-airlines-suspende-la-ruta-dallas-a-quito.

In view of a recent request to the CNAC of the airline to modify its operating permit to and from Ecuador, where it has requested to increase its current Boeing aircraft 737, Boeing 757, Boeing 767 y Airbus A319, the Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 it is important to analyze this request and what it may imply for the service that this airline provides in the country.

Detail of the American Airlines request:

It should be remembered that the Airbus A321 the airline already operated for a little more than 3 weeks between Miami and Guayaquil during December 2016 last, instead of the flight that the airline uses with Boeing 737-800. With the incorporation of the Airbus A320/A321 we could see two situations:

  • Better service with new planes, with premium entertainment and new, more comfortable American interiors.
  • Reduction of supply and capacity between Ecuador and Miami.

The first point is clearly an excellent benefit for the user, that would leave behind the not so far to leave the Boeing fleet 757 especially, but to the detriment of the point 2, where there would be a clear reduction in supply and capacity compared to the B757. The aforementioned Airbuses could carry fewer passengers and cargo, being able to give a similar case to what happened some time ago when LATAM Ecuador Airlines switched to Boeing 767 by Airbus 319 on the Quito route – Miami, which eventually led to the suspension of the route by 1 year.

The Airbus A320 could, I say could for reasons of autonomy, become a replacement for the Airbus A319 that covers the route 5 times a week between Dallas and Quito, but you would have to do the math, taking into account that the A319 fulfills the flight from Fort Worth to Mariscal Sucre, longest of the airline for this type of aircraft and the difference in autonomy is a little more than 400 miles between both aircraft of the same family, but we'll see, although it has been possible to know that this route has a good occupation and profitability, so in high season they have gone up to 1 daily flight between DFW and UIO, so the A320 sounds like an excellent candidate to continue strengthening the route.

The other possibility is the definitive replacement of the Boeing 737 by Airbus A321 in Guayaquil, where does it fly 14 times a week (2 Daily flights), If the examination that the plane passed between Miami and Guayaquil was favorable, of course. You have to take into account, that this reduction in supply and capacity that the airline would implement in the country has as a great justification, the gradual reduction in the travel abroad of Ecuadorians and the lower number of foreigners traveling to Ecuador. Projections indicate at least a reduction in the -5% for Quito and from -12% for Guayaquil.

In the case of Quito, where does it fly 14 times a week (2 Daily flights), if we were to see a reduction of the double operation of Boeing 757 por Airbus A321 (main candidate in my view) would be strong, above all in the ease of luggage, that we all know that when traveling to Miami, you rarely come back with just one suitcase ;).

History American Airlines in Ecuador

Its presence in the country could be said to go back a long time with the first international operation in Ecuador with Panagra. – Pan American-Grace Airways and later with Eastern Airlines with the routes inherited from Braniff International Airways, these routes would later be purchased by American Airlines from Eastern to operate them from Miami International Airport. After the purchase of these routes, American becomes the main airline in the United States to operate to Latin America and becomes a benchmark throughout the region.. On 1 990 begins this expansion towards the region and to Ecuador the airline arrives exactly for the first time on 1 august 1 990, operating a daily flight to Quito and another to Guayaquil via Cali in Colombia.

For the beginning of 2 001 the airline increases and strengthens its operations in Ecuador with two daily flights to Quito with Boeing 757 and two to Guayaquil directly with Airbus 300 y Boeing 757 always from miami. Over the years, the operation in Quito was consolidated, while Guayaquil had a permanent rotation of equipment according to the season and demand between Boeing 757 y Boeing 737-800. For him 2 013 sales reached USD 68 million and with the exit of service of the Airbus 300 the operation in Guayaquil changed to the Boeing 767-300ER offering a better and modern service for the largest city in the country.

The 2 015 it was undoubtedly the year of greatest growth for the airline in the Ecuadorian market, considerably increasing its offer in both Quito and Guayaquil with the combined operation of Boeing 757 and 767 reaching a projection in sales of USD 80 million with 28 weekly frequencies between Ecuador and the United States.

In these 25 years of operations the airline reported that more than 10 million passengers from Ecuador to the US. and approximately 17 Millions of pounds of cargo have traveled to the US. and the world from Miami International Airport.
