After an extensive two-year test flight program, Airbus has successfully completed its project taxi, autonomous takeoff and landing (ATTOL). Airbus press photo.
Upon completion of this project, Airbus has achieved taxiing, the autonomous takeoff and landing of a commercial aircraft through fully automatic flight tests based on on-board image recognition technology, the first in world aviation.
Total, were made more than 500 aircraft test flights Airbus A350. About 450 of those flights were dedicated to collecting raw video data, to support and tune algorithms, while a series of six test flights, each with five takeoffs and landings per run, were used to test autonomous flight capabilities.
Airbus initiated the ATTOL project to explore how autonomous technologies, including the use of machine learning algorithms and automated tools for data labeling, processing and model generation, could help pilots focus less on aircraft operations and more on strategic decision-making and mission management. Airbus can now explore the potential of these technologies to improve future aircraft operations, while improving aircraft safety, ensuring that today's unprecedented levels are maintained.
Airbus will continue to research the application of autonomous technologies alongside other innovations in areas such as materials, Alternative powertrains and connectivity. By taking advantage of these opportunities, Airbus is opening up possibilities to create new business models that will transform the way they develop, they manufacture, they fly, power and maintain aircraft.
The rapid development and demonstration of the capabilities of ATTOL made possible by a global cross-divisional and cross-functional team comprising Airbus engineering and technology teams, Airbus Defence and Space, Acubed (Project Wayfinder), Airbus China and ONERA under the leadership of Airbus UpNext.
