In this different installment, We review a debate that has been generated in social networks more than once, clap or not when the plane lands. Foto Tapestry Films.
Quiet, sitting in your seat and looking out of the ventana how does the flight you're on land, hits the ground softly and suddenly, a person applauds, then another and almost the whole plane is clapping, but why?
This debate was opened the other day with this tweet:
On #Ecuador you applaud when you land back to your country 🤷♂️ https://t.co/wPMmkBYORF
— Nicholas Larenas ✈️ (@n_larenas) August 22, 2020
If you go to see the thread in that tweet that was born from the video Karla Rivadeneira who landed in Guayaquil from New York, podrán ver una gran variedad de opiniones sobre si «está bien o mal hacerlo», so first I want to know if you do:
how can they read, I commented that in Ecuador there is a custom of applauding when a plane lands and hits wheels at its destination, something like a kind of tradition of this country, but that same tweet revealed that there are many more countries where it is done:
- Russia
- Argentina
- The Savior
- Greece
- Qatar
- Paraguay
- Peru
- Italy
- Venezuela
Apparently it is a more common reaction or tradition than we knew at first.
Why do you clap when a plane lands?
We are now going to review some of the reasons that lead passengers to applaud, that were also revealed in this debate:
- Tradition.
- Many people do not like to fly and it is a release of emotions.
- The emotion of returning to your country (for many reasons).
- It is done more on long flights than on short ones.
- Thanks and congratulations to the pilots for getting them safely to their destination.
- When there is a delay in departure and you finally reach your destination.
- When it was a complicated approach due to weather as an example.
- Inauguration of a new air route.
It's very clear, there are several reasons. I personally do not applaud, but it's respectable that people do it for whatever reason.
Saying that it is good or bad is subject to the reality of one and another passenger, but that undoubtedly gives a different touch to a flight when the whole plane starts to applaud massively.

I always do and I clap!! with gratitude. PILOTS are the leaders of our successful arrival!!
and that's fine!
Understand how a plane with envelope 200 pax I was able to fly and moreover manage to reach land safe and sound ,it's a tremendous feat…Physics and technology play a very important role…applaud for every time an aircraft of these characteristics touches the runway, It is an immense pride to know that a couple of pilots manage to land these tremendous aircraft without any problem., independent if it is 737…747..,etc…they are great professionals, years of experience and many flying hours,I personally admire and applaud them and they deserve much more than that,do not forget that thanks to them,We feel safe and very confident that we will arrive victorious at our destination.….????
Excuse me Nicholas, getting off topic,
Do you have an email with which I can contact you personally??
Of course: [email protected]
I used to do it before, when they were the pilots, who with their ability and skill had to land the plane!!! Today it is practically automatic and no longer merits applause…..
The merit is still valid, airplanes still don't fly themselves.
Above all for recognition and congratulations to the pilot. If there was a basket, I would leave a tip. Maybe next time in an envelope.
That's good!!!!
I do not applaud, but it's such a relief to land and arrive that maybe I should, I've traveled a lot but I can't stop feeling afraid
