is it safe to take café or tea on a flight? I tell you how the preparation of these drinks works on airplanes and more information.

The aviation has endless curiosities it is included myths, but today we will talk about a topic that continues to sound in various media: to drink or not to drink coffee in flight.

Surely they have flown at some time and if not, At some point when they do, they will be offered a glass of water., juice, drink, have the coffee.

These are the last ones that are controversial and that have generated interviews and even studies on whether it is safe to take them on a plane or not..

Drink coffee or tea on a flight?

For many people, a coffee in the morning or after a few hours is essential for their functioning, but certainly on a flight there are not many options.

Coffee on a plane has sparked debate as industry insiders point out that:

  • Airplane coffee pots are not cleaned often enough.
  • The water on board the planes is from the tap or from any municipal source.

Let's review point by point:

the coffee pots

We must take into account that each airline is different. Some have machines to prepare coffee to suit the passenger (Ej. Nescafe machines), others have coffee makers where last coffee is made and others use coffee to dilute in hot water.

If we check the last two options, we are facing the need and confidence in the industry that these are disinfected every certain number of flights to avoid contamination, there are even parameters and times that airlines must meet.

Water

Here comes the most important point. water from airplanes, In most cases, even more so in our countries, comes directly from the municipal power supply, so it is drinking water, with the implications we know.

Some countries or airports go further and the water is filtered and purified before going to the plane or according to the airline and its services on the ground..

Having said that, aircraft water is stored in tanks (which must also be cleaned and disinfected according to health and manufacturer parameters) for the duration of the flight, that's why in the bathrooms it always says not to drink that water, if you are thirsty ask for a glass of water cabin crew, that is bottled water.

Moving on at this point, the tea or coffee water is not bottled, but it comes from the water that is previously loaded for the flight, but with the big difference: this water is previously boiled.

being boiled, just like in our houses, is the most effective method of killing disease-causing organisms, virus, bacteria and parasites, but with a difference, the higher the altitude, the longer it takes to reach temperatures that make the water safe.

This is why industry personnel have said that it is difficult to offer good quality water for tea or coffee, given the rush they sometimes undergo to perform the food service or because of the time it takes to boil the water (3 a 5 minutes).

What can I do if I want a coffee?

If you don't trust what they offer you on the plane, you can bring your own coffee or tea purchased at any airport shop, be this in a thermos or in the cardboard cup that they usually serve it (some airlines do not allow it).

should i drink coffee or tea?

Remember that just like when we travel to another country, we are prone to suffering from a gastrointestinal disease due to food consumption or even due to the change of water, what resembles what can happen in flight.

The final decision is yours, there is no conclusive study or official recommendation that says not to do it.

once they read this, what do you think about drinking or not drinking coffee on a flight? I read them in the comments.

Nicolás I am a smoker and coffee lover, I have to make a flight to Montreal despite how much I admire and enjoy aviation, I will opt for you, which can be more relaxing and invites me less to smoke, thanks for the comment

  2. I really didn't know about this, I thought that if they offered it to you it was because there was no risk but maybe you have to think about it 2 times before accepting a coffee, it depends on how you feel, what you have eaten and even a medical condition. Good post I found it interesting since I had never asked myself before.
