The General Directorate of Civil Aviation published new protocols for the transport and use of portable batteries (power banks) for flights in Ecuador.

In an effort to strengthen safety standards in national and international air transportation, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has announced the entry into force of the new Provisions relating to dangerous goods transported by passengers and crew. These measures, operational since 27 march 2026, They put a special focus on the management of energy storage devices and lithium batteries.

The update responds to the technical need to mitigate risks associated with overheating and fires in the cabin., ensuring the integrity of flight operations.

Regulations for the transportation of “Power Banks” in Ecuador

Power banks or portable batteries, defined as devices designed to recharge consumer electronic equipment, are subject to strict restrictions under the new regulations for devices up to 100 Wh:

Cabin exclusivity:

  • must be transported as hand luggage;
  • They should not be recharged while on board the aircraft;
  • should not be used to recharge a portable electronic device while on board the aircraft;
  • No more than two power banks can be carried per person.; and must be individually protected to avoid short circuits when not in use (by placing them in their original retail packaging or otherwise insulating the terminals; for instance, covering with adhesive tape
  • exposed terminals or placing each power bank in a plastic bag or protective sleeve);

Protocol for high capacity batteries

For those equipment or batteries whose nominal capacity is greater than 100 Wh but do not exceed 160 Wh, The regulations establish an additional protocol, since the passenger must appear at the Check-in area and request prior approval from the air carrier or operator before boarding..
