Under resolution of the Ministry of Development of Spain dated 5 march 2018, the Spanish airline Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas authorized to fly to Ecuador. It is still pending to know the exact date of intention to start these flights, which may be Quito O Guayaquil.
Just as I had published at the end of this past January, A Spanish airline was seeking authorization and assignment of frequencies to fly from that European country to Ecuador.
In the bilateral agreements between both countries, 9 frequencies, of these 6 were requested and authorized by Plus Ultra to fly to Ecuador, leaving the resolution as follows:
In relation to the procedure for assigning traffic rights between Spain and Ecuador initiated on date 23 of January of 2018, once it has been verified that the reasons for denial provided for in the article do not exist 13.2 of the Royal Decree 1678/2011, from 18 of November, which regulates information on air traffic rights from agreements with third States to which Spain is a party and the regime for their exercise, This General Directorate of Civil Aviation has resolved:
Assign the traffic rights available in the Spain – Ecuador air market as follows::
- Six (6) weekly frequencies to Plus Ultra.
Consequently, taking into account the frequencies assigned prior to this procedure, The capacity in this market is established as follows:
- Cinco (5) weekly frequencies to Air Europa.
- Seven (7) weekly frequencies to Iberia.
- Six (6) weekly frequencies to Plus Ultra.
Under the frequency assignment procedure, Now from Spain and Ecuador there are only 3 available to assign, which could potentially be taken 2 by Air Europa to complete the 7 weekly flights and 1 remaining for the same Plus Ultra to complete the same number of flights. If any other Spanish airline at any given time determines the need to fly to Ecuador, Ecuador must request that bilateral agreements be improved – Spain.
It had been speculated that among the candidate airlines to obtain these frequencies were the airlines Wamos Air, Norwegian Air International, LEVEL y Evelop, but finally we will have Plus Ultra in Ecuador, airline that in one way or another already has experience flying in our country.
About Plus Ultra Airlines
More Ultra (IATA PU – ICAO PUE), founded in the year 2011 by Julio Martínez Sola and Fernando González Enfedaque, both part of the defunct Air Madrid, airline that flew to Quito and Guayaquil until the 15 from December to 2006 will close operations to all its destinations.
Plus' base of operations is located at the Madrid Barajas International Airport from where it currently flies only international routes with a fleet made up of 3 aircraft of the Airbus A340-300 model that have a capacity 303 passengers configured in 3 lessons (Business, Economy Premium y Economy)
Today with its long-range fleet, The airline only flies to airports in South America, adding up 3 destinations in the region, which are:
- Lima – Jorge Chavez International Airport
- Santiago de Chile – Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport
- Caracas – Maiquetia International Airport
Another line of business that the airline has is the leasing of its ACMI aircraft or wet lease rentals for other airlines or charter flights.. Within this form of business the airline landed in the Manta Airport after the earthquake that hit the Ecuadorian coast arriving with humanitarian aid, rescue and fire personnel.
Within this year's plans 2018 For Plus Ultra, it stands out to continue growing in the region and the incorporation of up to 2 Airbus A330-200 model aircraft, with whom they would possibly begin their flights to Ecuador.
Operation and flights Spain – Ecuador
With the assignment of this 6 new frequencies, The Ecuadorian market will be covered with up to 21 weekly flights (They may be less depending on high or low season), of which 3 are served by the only Ecuadorian airline flying to Europe which is LATAM Ecuador which flies 3 times a week from Guayaquil.
With all the assigned flights there will be more than 12.500 Seats available between Ecuador and Spain, a record number between both nations.
Currently all flights between both countries are made to and from Madrid, Therefore, this market could be reaching its maximum supply and it would be interesting for current airlines or others to explore alternatives such as Barcelona where there is important connectivity and Ecuadorians living there..
So far the airline has not presented the formal request to fly to Ecuador before the Civil Aviation Council of Ecuador – CNAC, so in the next – In weeks and months we will learn more details such as the destination(s) in Ecuador and the number of final frequencies to operate., since the 6 assigned does not imply the total use of them, as is the case of Iberia that uses 6 from 7.
We will keep reporting…

I have a lot of experience working at the airport and in passenger service.. I'm looking for a job on this new airline.
Good that the supply increases to reduce costs and we can think about being able to travel in our economy., That will increase the dynamics of the economy and the bringing in of foreign currency and why not do tourism?, a hug
Of course, Marcos., Let's hope his arrival in the country materializes..
There is a boom of Spanish airlines in Ecuador and it is another great news for local aviation, tourism and investment. More money comes to our country from Europe and it is precisely what we need so that there is more employment and economic activity.
Although it is true that the Ultra Plus Airbus A340-300 are already veterans, Hopefully the A330-200 will arrive or in the future others like the A350 or B787… Although the most important thing is that the arrival of new airlines is completed and increased or that they resume operations..
