In this new guide I leave my tips to buy cheap tickets, applies for any time of the year and even country.
Have you thought about how to find the best ticket prices on both domestic and international flights?? Here I share with you some tips that could help you save some dollars, Sure, there are many of these guides on the internet, but I will tell you from my perspective and experience.
I share an expanded and updated video about it:
Tips to buy cheap tickets
To plan
Before buying, try to keep in mind one or two destinations from your country so that you can be attentive to the promotions that local or foreign airlines may launch over time. For instance, if you want to travel to Punta Cana, also have a plan B New York, so you can have two options, do not set your purchase goal in a single destination.
Do not take vacations from your job until you have the ticket at the dream price, since the price variation could change your plans and you could lose those rest days or end up paying more.
buy with time
Once you have your defined destinations, treat as much as possible, make the purchase with at least 3 months in advance for international routes and 1 month for domestic. This purchase time could be shortened or lengthened depending on airline promotions or high/low season.
Be flexible with dates, that will allow you to find better promotions.
Always pay attention to promotions
One of the best ways to find lower prices is to always be aware of the promotions that airlines usually launch regularly.. These promotions usually come out in low season, black friday, cyber monday, anniversaries, etc. So it would be good if you also set an airline with which you would like to travel and know those dates that do not change from year to year..
The promotions can always be found on the social networks of the airlines or in their newsletters, so it is good to be registered to them.
look for low dates
The low dates are the low seasons, that often change by country, but you can notice that a low time is when everyone returns from summer/winter vacations or it is back to school in your country. On those dates the occupation is less, so airlines usually (it's not a rule) lower your prices.
For instance, always on close dates and on a holiday the costs will be higher, so avoid those already known dates.
Special dates
It is said that, that, for example, buy or fly on Tuesday to Thursday between the 15 hours or at midnight the tickets are cheaper, It is something that I have not yet managed to agree despite having tried, but it doesn't hurt to try, you could be lucky.
Another option is to search for flights on dates such as New Year, when almost no one flies and the airlines need to fill those quotas so as not to lose money, you could be lucky.
Use automatic alerts
Many search engines such as Despegar.com or Hopper (it's an app) they allow you to record personalized alerts based on a value for which you are willing to pay for a ticket. It can generate infinite alerts and as soon as the tickets drop to the price you are looking for, you will receive a notification or email with the details so that you can buy immediately.
Don't just search the airline's website
Personally, I can say that at least the 90% of the tickets I buy I do it through the airline's website since it is cheaper, but this rule can change and you could find cheaper tickets in Despegar, Kayak, Booking o similares.
Buying a ticket in the fashion search engines will almost always be more expensive in my experience, since these add to the value of the ticket your profit or commission that goes from 5 to the 40 dollars or more.
The exercise that I do is always to search first in a passage search engine, I find the cheapest ticket, I see the airline and the route, with that detail I go and immediately compare it on the official website of the airline, It has always been cheaper for me to buy directly.
search more than once
Always search for tickets in more than one search engine or airline, do not stay with the first result until you are 100% it sure is the cheapest option, but remember that cheap, could also be the longest.
Remember that airlines use algorithms, so from a first search to the second the price will almost certainly increase, but later it might come back down, It's a matter of luck and playing a little.
Also check searches across multiple airlines, you could get a good surprise.
travel with scales
If you want to pay even less, search engines allow you to find very crazy routes with 2 or more scales, which generally translates into lower cost, but yes on a longer flight because of the stopovers and the waits.
I once found a ticket from Quito to Beijing for only $580 Dollars, but with 3 outbound travel days and others 3 back with 3 scales each was it worth? for price yes, but for time, maybe not.
Buy online not in office
If you buy your entry ticket in office, it will be more expensive because of what the airlines call the Emission Fee, which is a value that they charge for printing the paper and for the person who attended you, on the web there is no such charge.

Thank you Adriana.
I want to do the same journey, how did you get at that price, information please, Thanks in advance.
Prices are subject to season, demand and other factors. The price indicated here was in past conditions of low demand and low fuel cost. I recommend you watch the video where I leave several tips that can help you.
Thank you very much for the information, I will travel to Australia for studies this year and this will surely help me.
successes with the search.
Excellent information, Thanks a lot.
You are welcome!
I think the main tip, it will always be buying with time (the second, buy in low season).
Last year I bought 6 GYE-UIO tickets to $18 c/u (just ida) and DCA-GYE (round trip) a $200 c/u (both with almost 10 months in advance)
So is, anticipation is essential.
I personally consider that you do not know closely the work of a travel agent to find a good route or an economic rate. I do not see it as simple as you comment when you say that the charge is only for printing a piece of paper. Kind regards
It was not said that it was just to print a paper, it is also because of the agent's job in looking for a ticket, as expressed in this publication.
Personally, I find that travel agencies find the best rates for you, for a comfortable Fee of $30 plus VAT.
You can have the information of the route of the agency and you buy it directly, saving you those $30.
First I search on Skyskanner and then I buy on the page(s) of the airline. If you buy with scale of more than 4 hours my recommendation is to see the possibility that you go out to visit the city, only if it's very close (maximo 30 minutes from the airport). This is how I had the opportunity to get to know a very important city in a country that I had never visited..
Excellent recommendations Ines.
The detail is that when one enters the country, later, when re-entering the airport you must pay the airport tax (time and money).
Not all countries are like this, you have to check with everyone.
