Airbus debuts the first cockpit with touch screens, equipping with this new technology the Airbus A350 de China Eastern Airlines.

Airbus has begun deliveries to airlines of the first A350s equipped with new touchscreen cockpit displays.

Developed especially for the A350 together with Thales, will offer operational improvements, increased crew interaction, Cabin symmetry and smoother information management. The 18 from December, China Eastern Airlines received the first A350 equipped with the new devices in Toulouse. Till the date, about 20 airlines have selected this option for their new A350s.

Of the six large screens in the A350 cabin, three can now be touch: the two external screens plus the lower center screen. These displays now offer touch screen capability for pilots when presenting Electronic Flight Bag applications (EFB).

The new technology, which was recently certified for the A350 by EASA in November, will facilitate greater flexibility and better interaction between both pilots, particularly during these scenarios:

  • (a) before takeoff (to calculate takeoff performance by entering data into the flight management system “FMS”).
  • (b) in flight / cruise (to access route navigation charts).
  • (c) during landing preparation (to consult terminal charts before entering data into the FMS).

What's more, during high workload phases of flight, Touchscreen capability reduces the need for pilots to make multiple cursor inputs and eliminates switching between screens when using EFB applications in conjunction with the lower center display.

The A350 ONLY features the latest aerodynamic design, a carbon fiber fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines. boards, These features translate into unmatched levels of operational efficiency with a reduction in 25 percent in fuel consumption and emissions.

Until the end of last November, the A350 XWB family had received 959 firm orders of 51 customers.
