In this post we clarify the new travel requirements to the USA, in terms of quarantining and presenting proof to board.
Given the first information widely disseminated by thousands of media outlets, In this space we will clarify what the current mandatory requirements are to enter or be able to board to boarding for the United States.
After the inauguration of the new president in Washington, new general guidelines for USA regarding the management of the pandemic were generated from the White House and one of these logically included flights, but at the same time a lot of misinformation was generated that is clarified here with official information.
Is there a quarantine upon arrival in the United States or do I have to present a negative test? Here the answer 👇
Quarantine upon arrival
The main concern of travelers seeking to reach the main travel market from Latin America was about quarantine upon arrival, but this is purely optional and is a recommendation for those arriving from countries with high levels of contagion., but IT IS NOT MANDATORY:
- You must comply with other applicable CDC guidelines regarding international travel, including periods recommended self-quarantine or self-isolation after entering the United States.
- Get tested 3 a 5 days after the trip and stay home for 7 days after the trip.
- Even if the test is negative, stay home during 7 full days.
- If your test is positive, isolate yourself to prevent others from becoming infected.
- If the test is not done, the safest thing is to stay home during 10 days after the trip.
- Avoid being around people who are at higher risk for serious illness during 14 days, whether you get tested or not.
- Get tested 3 a 5 days after the trip and stay home for 7 days after the trip.
- These are all recommendations, no mandatory measures.
Negative test to travel
As we had already mentioned, from the 26 of January of 2021, All passengers seeking to fly to the United States must present a negative test document carried out maximum 3 days before the flight:
- From the 26 from January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC) will require that all passengers traveling to the United States. UU. or that remain in transit in that country from international destinations, including US citizens, provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test or documentation of recovery.
COVID-19 testing must:
- Be a viral test (molecular antigen) with a “negative” or “COVID-19 not detected” result
- Be done within three calendar days prior to departure
- Show written proof of the passenger's negative laboratory test result
Recovery documentation must include:
- Proof of positive test result issued at most 90 days before departure
- A letter from a certified health care provider or public health official clearing you to travel

Must be 3 days before boarding.
Hi Nicolas, A question, I am going to travel from Ecuador to the United States. I'm going to get to JFK but I'm not going to stay in New York, From this state I am going to go by road to another state. Do I have to comply with the minimum quarantine? 3 days in New York or do I only have to present the negative PCR test?
Only the PCR to board to the United States.

Thanks for the info!
I am Mexican and I DO NOT have a Visa for the United States, I can get tested and they will let me enter the USA?
You absolutely need a visa to be able to travel to the United States..
Hi Nicolas, thanks for the info. A query, If I wanted to travel to Florida first, and some 6 days later to Newark, I have to take two different covid tests, one before the trip to each destination, right?? You would not be required to remain in quarantine for 14 days until it arrives in the two different states of Florida and New Jersey? Thank you very much in advance for your kind attention..
There is no quarantine, for now. About the test topic, you only need to travel to the United States, Once you are inside the country, no proof is required to travel..
Very good explanation thanks Nicolas
Buenas tardes. I am an American citizen and next to visit Mexico in February. My question is this . despite already having both vaccines. That is, already vaccinated. Should I get tested to return or what should I present?. Thanks
For Mexico there is no entry requirement, but if you mean to return later to the United States, Yes, You must also undergo the respective test, even those vaccinated have no exceptions.
Buenas tardes. If I travel from Peru the COVID test can be 40 hours before the trip???
Son 3 days before maximum
My question is this, the American citizen who returns to the country, country, have to get a covid19 test, ok,but he has to quarantine too???
The test yes, how can you read, isolation or quarantine is not mandatory, It is a recommendation.
Hello there! Thanks for publishing the article but I have a question…That is now currently but Biden says it will be mandatory, I'm right?
Greetings and thanks!.
This is until now, as you say, Biden commented that quarantine will be imposed, but there is no exact date or how they will apply the measure if they implement it..
Thank you very much for responding and we will have to stay tuned.. A hug.
What does that mean? Proof of the positive test result will issue at most 90 days before departure?? In that way
If you were positive, you must show proof that you have had that result along with a medical certificate.
They will remove restrictions on travelers coming from the Schengen area? That is, I am from Spain and if I have a negative PCR test I can enter the country. ?
That exact detail is not yet known..
Tourists from Europe can enter the Los Angeles airport on 26 from January? With the test result negative?
Of course, There are no restrictions other than submitting the proof with the indicated details.
It isn't true, If you are not an American or a resident you need permission from the embassy to enter the US
Do you have an official link where that information is confirmed?? I can't find it anywhere.
You don't know how to read, you are not informed(O) and you only confuse with your comments, 1)They have never said that a special permit is required, 2) They have never mentioned that only North American residents or citizens can enter the United States. They have not placed restrictions by nationality., 3) very clearly this report mentions that quarantine is optional, 4) the only real thing is that 3 days before the flight they must take the test, wear a face mask and make it an urgent essential flight. DO NOT BELIEVE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT WELL INFORMED.
hello, I am Argentine but I travel with a European passport, It will be a problem when entering?
There is no such restriction.
No, You can only enter if you are an American or an American resident
That's not like that Marien, there is no nationality restriction.
I travel on Saturday January 30th when I take the test. And if I test negative, however I want, I must be in quarantine.
It must be maximum 3 days before the flight.
Tourists from Europe can enter the Los Angeles airport on 26 from January? With the test result negative?
Yeah right, No problem.
Excellent article Nicolas..
Clarifies many doubts and misinterpretations about trips to the US.
Congratulations.
Thank you very much Freddy!
