Why on some planes are there numbers on the aircraft wings? Today I tell you about this new aeronautical curiosity.

From hooks, going by gaps, ice or even a triangle are several of the concerns and curiosities that aviation has to offer to the general public and that you may not have known, but you did wonder at least once why they are there and what they are for.

In this new installment we are going to review another interesting fact that I was asked the other day, which again has to do with airplane wings., good of the Airbus in this case.

Why are there some numbers on the wings of airplanes?

You are flying, you selected window, you look towards the wing and you realize that for takeoff or during landing there are writings on a part of the ala some numbers, but what are they for and what is their purpose?

We must first introduce to you the flaps, If you don't know what they are, we'll tell you they are a moving part of the plane whose main purpose is, among others, is to increase the lift coefficient of the wing by increasing the surface of the wing, in simple words they make the wings bigger at the moment the flaps are deployed.

They also increase resistance and are used in takeoff, approach and landing phase according to runway conditions, weather or aircraft your deployment grades may vary.

With this introduction I tell you that what you see in the cover image of this publication has a reason focused on the aircraft maintenance and the correct behavior of the flaps.

But for what? The idea is that maintenance technicians can verify the correct operation and deployment of the flaps, To do this, a mechanic in the cockpit or control cabin lowers the flaps and another mechanic in the back at the height of the wing checks that the flaps 1, 2, 3 and Full matches what is happening in the cockpit with what is physically going down the wing.

And what do the numbers mean? It is how far the flaps have been deployed in degrees of pitch.

If you did not know this particularity, let me know in the comments.

  1. I already knew about the flaps (I like to go behind them and listen to the engines) , that before taking off they tested them, but about the # and that someone will verify outside the plane if they activated at all degrees, that is not, I'll be there. on the next flight. Thanks

Kind regards, Very interesting information about flaps and their markings for reference. You could please give us information about the "flaps asymmetry" when I was acting in functions, on more than one occasion we managed emergency actions for this reason.
