The present day, Guayaquil Airport obtained accreditation from the ACI – Airport Council International Carbon Footprint – Mapping Level and becomes the first in the country to obtain this environmental certification between 2 and 5 million passengers.

Within the environmental control process that the ACI applies to the airports belonging to this organization, they show up 4 levels of control or accreditations, where each one is more important and demonstrates a greater green commitment to care for the planet and reduce the Carbon Footprint. These levels are:

  • Mapping:

This step consists of measuring the carbon footprint of the airport. To achieve this level of accreditation, the airport must determine the operational margin and the emission sources that are within that margin, collect data, calculate the annual emissions for the previous year for those sources, produce a carbon footprint report and agree with an independent entity that verifies the report before final delivery to ensure that the calculation is in line with the ISO standard 14064.

  • Reduction:

It implies a management and progressive reduction of the carbon footprint. To achieve this accreditation, the airport must comply with the requirements of the previous step of measuring the carbon footprint, demonstrate that there are procedures for CO2 management, and demonstrate that a reduction in the carbon footprint is taking place by analyzing the emission data in consecutive years.

  • optimization:

This step requires a commitment to a third party for carbon footprint reduction. The third party may be airlines or various service providers, for example, handling companies, catering, air traffic control or others working on the airport site. It also implies a commitment on the modes of access to the airport with the authorities and users. To achieve this level of accreditation, the airport must meet the requirements of the previous Mapping and Reduction steps., extend the scope of application of carbon footprint reduction measures, and present evidence of its commitment to operators to reduce emissions.

  • Neutrality:

Involves achieving carbon neutrality by offsetting the remaining direct emissions. In addition to complying with the previous steps, the airport must demonstrate its commitment to achieve a set of operations that are neutral for direct and indirect emissions, using recognized clearing methods.
