We interviewed Rob Westerman General Manager for the Andean Countries of Air France-KLM in Quito about the new route Paris-Quito de Joon.

After 25 years, Air France returns to Ecuador in the form of its subsidiary Joon, an airline with a different vibe and concept of flying, but with the highest standards of the Group.

within this framework, we were able to interview Rob Westerman, who will tell us details about the airline, operation, expectations and much more about this new route.

The interview

This interview was conducted in English-Spanish, I appreciate the excellent predisposition of Rob to be able to carry it out. You can use YouTube's automatic subtitles option on this video.

Key points

  • The 14 May 2019 seasonal flights between Paris and Quito begin with 3 weekly frequencies on Tuesdays, thursday and saturday.
  • The flights will operate on the aircraft Airbus A340-300.
  • The airline expects the flight to become regular throughout the year based on the success of the initial flights..
  • For the flight to operate throughout the year, mainly the corporate market, must be developed from Quito to Paris, as well as the tourist segment.
  • Joon maintains full Air France service, but that allows you to experience a different service with service, WiFi, movies and documentaries.
  • Another characteristic of Joon is the informality of his crew dressed in slippers., jeans and t-shirt, which provides a different more casual atmosphere.
  • Joon targets a segment of entrepreneurs, but without leaving behind the essence of Air France.
  • Joon was used over the Air France brand for the options, alternatives and tests that the first offers with greater flexibility.
  • Joon is not a low cost airline, this is identified since the plane does not have a high density of tourist seats plus food and service.
  • Fares will maintain a standard at Air France and KLM prices.
  • At the moment there is no specific alliance with any Ecuadorian airline, but future alliances of shared code for destinations beyond Quito.
  • The initial challenge of the route is to achieve a average occupancy of 80%.
  • After 25 years Air France returns to Ecuador in the form of joon.
  • This flight is expected to achieve profitability during the first flying season.
  • Both KLM and Air France remain very strong in the region.
  • The group grows solidly in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, keeping 6 weekly flights to Caracas.

  1. Hi Nicolas, how will the theme be when joon disappears?
AF will assume the total of the frequencies and the seasonality of the route?
Because from what I understood, joon had been chosen because it was UIO, a city that required challenges for the legacy AF and was well served by KLM..

  2. Hopefully it will be consolidated and what happened with Condor from Germany will not happen, which did not even land in Quito.

Suddenly Air France would have tried to operate with an Airbus A330-200 in Quito to consolidate and then give Joon the opportunity to expand. Let us remember that when Air France operated in Quito it did so with B707 and later with B747-200… Of course there were other conditions, Today a lot has changed but I wish that Joon is successful and stays in Quito on a regular basis and not just seasonally.
