In this new installment we will explain what aircraft leasing or rental is and how it works, a more common practice than you imagine in the airline industry.

Perhaps you have heard that there are companies specialized in aircraft rental or maybe not., These companies are born from the airline's need to maximize its operations and not have the need to incur millionaire sums to acquire its own aircraft..

Aircraft rental is very common and a practice even in large airlines such as Emirates, where one would think that all the planes are their own. Hundreds of times we have seen airlines and manufacturers announce huge orders for dozens of aircraft, but really, are not always bought, but a specialized company is the one that makes the purchase and leases it to the advertised airline.

aircraft rental

Aircraft rental, which currently exceeds 50% of the world market for flying planes, is divided into the following categories:

Dry Lease – dry lease

It is the most common option on the market.. Commonly in a dry lease, the airline leases for a period of time previously determined in the contract (usually 3 a 5 extendable years), only the plane of your interest and while this time lasts, the leasing airline is fully responsible for operating with its own pilots and cabin crew, safe, marketing and sales, and takes full charge of aircraft maintenance.

Wet Lease – Wet lease or ACMI

In this case, it is an airline that offers the leasing service to another. A) Yes, An airline that needs one or several aircraft for a short period of time for various reasons hires the services, where the owner of the aircraft provides aircraft, crew, maintenance, insurance (airplane, crew, maintenance and insurance), thus, the leasing airline is solely responsible for marketing and selling the flights.

A recent case was what happened with LATAM Airlines and Avianca, which contracted the Wet Lease services of Wamos Air.

Damp Lease – wet lease

This lease is less common, being a mixture of dry and wet lease. In this case, airlines lease aircraft and the owner covers them with pilots, maintenance and insurance, but not with cabin crew as an example, where these will be staff of the contracting airline.

There may be variations of this leasing alternative according to the needs of each airline.
