From THERE IT IS and ITF calls on world governments to save millions of specialized jobs in the airline industry.
The International Air Transport Association (THERE IT IS) and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) issued a joint statement calling for urgent government intervention to prevent a labor catastrophe in the airline industry and save millions of jobs.
Estimates from the Air Transport Action Group suggest that about 4,8 million jobs of aviation workers are at risk as a result of demand drop of air travel in more than 75% (August of 2020 compared to August 2019). The impact of border restrictions and quarantine measures related to COVID-19 has effectively shut down the aviation industry, grounding planes and idling aircraft manufacturing infrastructure and capacity.
The IATA and ITF request to governments includes calls for:
- Provide continued financial support for the aviation industry.
- Safely reopen borders without quarantine by implementing a globally harmonized system of pre-departure COVID-19 testing.
In addition to reopening borders with testing and financial support, The organizations also called on governments to develop a roadmap for long-term industry recovery., including investment in retraining and upskilling, and in ecological technologies, especially sustainable aviation fuels.
“Aviation faces an unprecedented labor catastrophe. Airlines have cut costs to the bone, but they only have left 8,5 months of cash in current conditions. Tens of thousands of jobs have already been lost and, unless governments provide more financial aid, likely to rise to hundreds of thousands. Aviation plays an essential role in connecting nations and transporting essential cargo, and it is in the self-interest of governments to offer more financial aid to keep the industry viable. But what is more important, Governments must work together to safely reopen borders. That means launching a global scheme to test passengers for COVID-19. With that in place, The quarantine can be eliminated and passengers can have the confidence to fly again”, said Alexandre de Juniac, Director General and CEO of IATA.
Fundamental to economic reactivation is the airline industry and all the actions that are generated to rescue it from the crisis., will help fewer jobs be lost daily.
