Although it was not a surprise that these planes would be retired, it was expected that until 2023 at most see them operating the airline's routes worldwide, while the 16 Airbus A350 that were ordered by the airline join the fleet.

with only 4 aircraft of this model still in operation for the airline (the others are in state of conservation), his replacement is gaining pace. The Airbus A350 is the call to occupy the space of this plane, that in his version -600 operate in Iberia from 26 June 2003, a relatively short history for the greatest of 340 in Iberia, but that the current situation forces us to say goodbye, In advance.

A total of 21 Airbus A340-300 y 18 Of the version -600 have passed through the Iberia fleet so far in the history of the airline that now give way, principally, to the A350 as new aircraft, modern, but above all more efficient in fuel consumption, main advantage over the plane that is gradually replacing.

Let us not leave behind the fleet of Airbus A330-200 aircraft and -300 who have also been part of this process of retirement of the -600, which are also the natural replacement for these aircraft in certain markets and segments to which Iberia operates.

The history of the A340 in Ecuador

For those of us who love aviation, the farewell of such an emblematic plane and that was so important to achieve historical milestones in the country always generates sadness when reporting it, although the passage to modernity is something very positive, does not leave behind the mixed feelings that this moment leaves behind.

An Airbus A340-300 at the Old Quito Airport, just on the last day of operations of this air terminal in the 2013.

For the end of the years 90, Iberia started the flights with the 340-300 to Quito and Guayaquil, con la famosa «triangulación» como reemplazo en ese entonces de los McDonnell Douglas DC-10, providing a new level of service for Ecuadorians and strengthening its presence in the country, reaching the 6 weekly flights back then.

few years later, with the addition of the larger version -600, Iberia began flights to Ecuador in the 2005, substantially increasing its offer with more seats available and reaching the expected daily flight, although its history in the Old Mariscal Sucre Airport in Quito was marked by media events in the public domain.

runway landings 17 of the Old Airport were always impressive due to the size of the A340.

after these events, the airline suspended the operation of the Airbus A340-600 in Quito, until better conditions arose in the city with the opening of the new airport located in Tababela thanks to its runway 4.090 meters, a historical fact occurred.

The day 28 October 2013, at 21:20 hours the historic first direct flight from Quito to Europe took off, which was given thanks to the new infrastructure and the 4 huge A346 engines, that made it possible to demolish myths and connect the capital with Europe for the first time on a direct regular commercial passenger flight, What would happen after other airlines do it too?.

  1. I have traveled so many times I fly 6650 IB a Lima
my row seat 21, before putting premium tourist was the 17 if I remember correctly. excellent attention. When will I be able to return to Lima?. I did it twice a year.

  2. I finally found people who can answer me, Does anyone know why Iberia bought in the 1990s? 90 to Aerolineas Argentinas to later scrap it, remove all its routes and then want to charge it again when the expropriation ended, they do it because they don't understand aviation, because they were someone's orders, because later they realized that it was too big for them since Iberia was not a good company worldwide, someone who knows can answer me, Cheers

  3. Definitely, it is a shame to let go of this giant that has been accompanying us for many years.
But the industry evolves, and you have to let go of this majestic plane to move forward.

postscript: very good photo at the beginning of the delivery, if someone didn't notice, that iberia lost the left wing winglet. ?

  4. Well maintained, I would keep flying it for many years. I thought about retiring in the but, my dear companion, they separate us before time. We lose a great plane in every way.

Saying goodbye to a friend is always hard. Six times I have flown with the Iberia A340-600 always knowing that it was one of the largest aircraft of the moment (especially for its length). Aviation changes and the way to fly, too. We will see what the future holds for us. And thanks to these friends.

  6. Congratulations for your excellent comments., they remind me of my time in aviation, I read them with care and admiration for their versed writings

  7. It is very sad to lose such good aviation companies due to this pandemic and that the government cannot do anything to solve this problem..

A very spacious and safe plane, I was able to fly from via Madrid to Quito in Tababela in one of them and it is a shame to say goodbye. Other airlines such as Lufthansa will continue to operate them once the Covid-19 pandemic is over. In the case of Iberia, great memories in Ecuador and luckily two incidents with this plane that did not happen to majors. The last left winglet in-flight loss as the photo in this article shows.

    Great memory! excellent plane!
