United Airlines announced that it has completed an agreement to work with the air mobility company Archer in the development of eVTOL electric aircraft.

All this as part of effort more large from the airline to invest in emerging technologies that decarbonize air travel, where instead of relying on traditional combustion engines, vertical takeoff and landing electric aircraft (eVTOL) of Archer are designed to use electric motors and have the potential to be used in the future as an 'air taxi' in urban markets.

Under the terms of the agreement, United to contribute airspace management expertise to help Archer develop battery-powered short-haul aircraft. Once the aircraft is in operation and has met United's commercial operating requirements, The airline, together with Mesa Airlines, would acquire a fleet of up to 200 of these electric aircraft that would be operated by a partner and are expected to provide customers with a quick way, low-carbon and cost-effective way to reach United hubs and travel in high-density urban environments over the next five years.

Working with Archer is another example of United's commitment to identifying and investing in innovative technology that can reduce carbon emissions and, at the same time, improve customer experience and achieve strong financial performance. The airline was one of the first to invest in Fulcrum BioEnergy and recently partnered with 1PointFive, a joint venture between Oxi Low Carbon Ventures and Rusheen Capital, to promote the establishment of the direct air capture and retention technology.

With current technology, Archer's aircraft are designed to travel distances of up to 60 miles at speeds up to 150 miles per hour and future models will be designed to travel faster and farther. Archer aircraft are not only capable of saving people time on their journeys, United estimates that the use of Archer's eVTOL aircraft could reduce CO2 emissions by a 47% per passenger on a trip between Hollywood and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), one of the initial cities where Archer plans to launch his fleet.

Led by Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Brett Adcock and Adam Goldstein, Archer's mission is to promote the benefits of sustainable air mobility at scale. Archer plans to introduce its full-scale eVTOL aircraft at 2021, start aircraft production in 2023 and launch flights for consumers in 2024. To drive this fourth transportation revolution and transform the way people live their daily lives, work and adventure, Archer has built a highly skilled team of top engineering and design talent., more than 200 years of collective eVTOL experience.

“We couldn't be happier to be working with an established global brand like United”, Brett Adcock said, co-CEO and co-founder of Archer. “This agreement represents much more than a simple commercial agreement for our aircraft., but rather the start of a relationship that we believe will accelerate our time-to-market as a result of United's strategic focus around certification., operations and maintenance of the FAA”.

Adam Goldstein added: “The United team shares our vision for a more sustainable future.. We are working closely with their test pilots and environmental teams to make sustainable urban air mobility a reality much sooner than people could ever imagine.".
