The Solidarity Plane of LATAM Airlines and the Silversea cruise line of the Royal Caribbean group, join in a strategic alliance to manage the removal and final destination of solid waste generated in Galapagos.
The agreement with the first ally of the LATAM Environmental Solidarity Plane, Silversea, showed up today, 21 from December to 2021, with the presence of its main representatives. The design of the program was developed in 2020 and the transport and management for its final disposal of the waste will begin in January of the 2022.
The program, which includes the removal of plastics, crushed glass, tetra pack containers and other waste, will be applied to San Cristóbal in the Galapagos Islands to contribute to its sustainable management.
“The alliance with Silversea, as one of the environmental care actions promoted by the Solidarity Plane, will favor the care and preservation of the Galapagos Islands, for both residents and visitors. The idea is to become a relevant actor that serves as a contribution in the management and treatment of waste, such as glass and cardboard. And the most important, is that it encourages other organizations to join this cause. LATAM has faced the crisis as an opportunity to reconsider and has invested this time in developing projects for South America and mainly in the Ecuadorian territory, a través de su renovada estrategia de Sostenibilidad” enfatizó Mónica Fistrovic, CEO of LATAM Airlines Ecuador.
For his part, fernando delgado, Silversea Vice President for Ecuador mentions that his operation also seeks to maximize the benefits to the local community, a balance between the prosperity of the Galapagos community and sustainable and responsible tourism. “We are delighted to sign this alliance with our LATAM partners, with whom we share the vision of being good corporate citizens, specially in Galapagos where actions like this help reduce our footprint, and maintain the balance of ecosystems”.
This alliance foresees that more than 10 tons of waste, between crushed glass, plastic and cardboard, that on the continent will be delivered to an environmental manager for their sustainable destination. with this alliance, both organizations seek to contribute to sustainable tourism and conservation.
The deal with Silversea as an environmental ally is part of the Avión Solidario program that the LATAM Group started 10 years and that it is present in all its subsidiaries in Chile, Colombia, Brazil, equator and Peru. In all cases, the initiative involves Non-Governmental Organizations (ONG) and government entities to guarantee access to health, attention to vulnerable populations in natural catastrophes and environmental protection.
