World Health Organization – WHO called on the world's governments to lift or relax the travel restriction current.

While it is true that viruses travel faster by air than by any other means of transportation, This does not take away from the fact that restricting free mobility or maintaining requirements such as quarantines or requests for tests at this point in the pandemic is exaggerated.

Exaggerated given that the implementation of the same measures that slow down the recovery of tourism and aviation, have not prevented the spread of the virus and even more so, has not stopped the social lack of control in the streets as the main source of contagion and expansion of daily cases.

The WHO's call to governments

In the world we have seen how some governments maintain maximum flexibility, such as Mexico, while others have retreated, In all cases, the management of the pandemic by placing restrictions on flights has not changed the reality at the core of society..

The WHO has generated the following recommendations to relax travel restrictions:

  1. Lift or relax international traffic bans as they do not provide added value and continue to contribute to the economic and social stress experienced by States. The failure of travel restrictions introduced after the detection and notification of the Omicron variant to limit international spread demonstrates the ineffectiveness of such measures over time. Travel measures (p. ej., use of face mask, tests, isolation/quarantine and vaccination) should be based on risk assessments and avoid imposing financial burden on international travelers in accordance with article 40 of the RSI.
  2. Do not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for international travel as the only path or condition allowing international travel given limited global access and unequal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. States Parties should consider a risk-based approach to facilitating international travel by lifting or modifying measures, such as testing and/or quarantine requirements, where appropriate, in accordance with WHO guidance.

A study by Oxera and Edge Health into the impact of air travel restrictions on the spread of variants in the UK has shown that travel restrictions are ineffective in preventing the spread of a new variant; they can only delay it slightly. Likewise this study shows that the additional testing requirements established by the British government had no effect in preventing the spread of Omicron, concluding that once the variant is present in a territory, travel restrictions serve no purpose in reducing its transmission.

In the sense of the recommendations, it is important for governments to once again introduce flexibility for travelers, that stimulate the local economy and support the generation of millions of direct and indirect jobs worldwide.

  1. The issue of the pandemic is an issue that at this point is used as the great pretext to impose exaggerated restrictions, that now only benefit pharmaceutical companies and associated industries in trillions of dollars, who have made a truly unprecedented fortune at the expense of people's fear. It is so sad to see that most governments still believe that there is only one way to combat the pandemic and that is to put more rigorous restrictions, taking away the rights of conscience and freedom of information. Instead of promoting a change in lifestyle habits and thus educating so that people live healthier, the solutions they impose are ineffective and meaningless, to the point that the WHO itself has to go back on its recommendations and say that vaccination should no longer be required, because vaccines (which in the process continue to be experimental), have proven not to be the solution that leaders promote so much. In Ecuador with 80% vaccination with two doses and they still say that you cannot go to the stadium. The middle and balanced point is to have negative tests when traveling and wear masks during the flight. Asking for more is going back and removing all restrictions would mean getting everyone to mature and accept that COVID is a viral disease that will remain among us like the flu. (or flu). For now, Promoting freedom of movement with a balanced and sensible posture is the only way to move forward and thus activate the economic recovery of world aviation..

  2. It would be very good for travelers to make it easier to travel but I still think they should wait a while to be sure.. Good post
