Colombia It is the third largest commercial airline market in Latin America, driven by its policies that promote air and tourist activity.

The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association – HIGH published an interesting analysis on the statistics that make the coffee country the third in importance in the region, I share it here:

The geographic location of Colombia allows it to position itself as an important center for cargo and passenger air transport. With 16 international airports, 26 airlines connecting the country directly with 28 nations, near 300 thousand monthly passengers and close to 70 thousand tons of cargo monthly, on average, Colombia is positioned as the third largest commercial aviation market in Latin America and the Caribbean and the El Dorado International Airport as the main cargo hub for the region.

The Colombian government implemented in a timely manner measures that allowed the safe reactivation of aviation, especially domestic transportation in a country that needs aviation due to its mountainous geography for the safe and efficient transportation of the population. This has consolidated Colombia as the second commercial aviation market with the fastest recovery in the region after Mexico., with passenger traffic 95% of their levels 2019 during the month of march (more of 1 million passengers), well above markets like Brazil (51.8%), Chile (47.6%) or Argentina (36.9%).

The total number of passengers in Colombia, to March issues 2022, shows a growth of 12% vs. march 2019, and the number of domestic passengers shows a growth of 31% vs. levels of 2019; which translates into the activation of a great value chain that includes growth of the aircraft fleet and, with that, increased demand for aircraft maintenance and repair services.

The country has 54 aeronautical training centers and, Come in 2010 and 2018 graduated more than 5.200 professionals with university or technical degrees related to aeronautics programs, of which more than 1.200 earned a degree in aeronautical engineering. According to Boeing data, Latin America will need to satisfy a demand for 126 thousand new professionals between 2021 and 2040, of which 38 a thousand will be pilots, 37 thousand technicians and 51 thousand cabin crew. There is a great opportunity to continue promoting training and generating jobs in the country.

With 35 new routes in the country, Viva Air sees a very large reactivation of the tourism market and cites its strategy in Colombia: “After the pandemic, we saw that families included travel in their family expenses.. We also saw that people came to value many direct routes. The state was always connected by Bogotá, and we perceive a significant demand for direct flights to destinations such as Cartagena. Viva started offering these destinations and we got very positive results. They were markets that were hidden and now we operate 188 routes with quite high occupations. It is a market that has been reacting and is here to stay”.
