The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) established itself as the busiest airport in the world in 2024, offering 62.7 million seats. This milestone marks the continuation of his dominance, having also occupied first place in 2023 and 2019. While air capacity at ATL increased by 2% in comparison with 2023, is still slightly below the levels of 2019 in a 1%.
In second place was the Dubai International Airport (DXB) with 60.2 million seats. DXB experienced significant growth in its air capacity since 2023, with a year-on-year increase in 7%. In comparison with 2019, capacity increased by 12%.
The Haneda Airport in Tokyo (HND) took third place with 55.2 million seats, showing an increase in capacity of the 5% with respect to 2023.
The geographical distribution of the busiest airports was wide, with four located in North America, three in Asia, two in Europe and one in the Middle East.
On 2024, the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) was ranked as the fifth busiest, while Denver International Airport (THE) ranked sixth. Both airports exceeded their performance of 2019, with increases in capacity 18% in DFW and 24% a THE, recording the highest growth among the top ten airports. What's more, in comparison with 2023, DFW and DEN expanded their capacity by a 7% and a 5% more than seats, respectively.
The Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) recorded the fastest growth among the top ten airports, with an increase of 29% in capacity compared to 2023. This is largely due to the continued recovery of air traffic in China following the global pandemic.. As a result, PVG went from being the fifteenth busiest airport in the world in 2023 to the ninth in 2024.
In comparison with 2019, Busiest Global Airports 2024 included four new additions:
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), which ranked fifth in 2024 and the thirteenth in 2019.
- Denver International Airport (THE), which ranked sixth in 2024 and the twenty-first in 2019.
- Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN), which ranked seventh in 2024 and the twelfth in 2019.
- Istanbul Airport (IS), which ranked eighth in 2024 and the sixteenth in 2019.
