Boeing forecasts global demand of almost 2,4 millions of new pilots commercial, technicians and cabin crew in the next 20 years.
Driven by emerging markets and changes in fleet composition, Boeing projects continued demand for aviation personnel as global commercial fleet adapts to meet traveler demand. The Perspective of Pilots and Technicians 2025 (Pilot and Technician Outlook – PTO) from Boeing anticipates that the industry will need almost 2,4 millions of new aviation professionals up 2044 to address the long-term increase in air travel.
Boeing forecasts global demand of almost 2,4 million pilots
Boeing, who presented his annual forecast to 20 years during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, indicated that commercial airlines will need substantial hiring and training to sustain the global commercial fleet, including:
- 660 thousand pilots
- 710 thousand maintenance technicians
- 1 million cabin crew
“As demand for commercial air traffic continues to outpace economic growth and the global fleet expands to meet that demand, our industry will keep the fleet flying safely and efficiently, supporting workforce development for airlines around the world”, said Chris Broom, vice president of Commercial Training Solutions, Boeing Global Services. “The industry is investing in technologies such as mixed reality, an immersive combination of physical and digital environments that enhances hands-on learning and situational awareness. Boeing supports customers with digitally advanced aviation training products and services to meet their needs. The foundation of our approach remains competency-based training and assessment methodology to ensure high-quality aviation training.”
In the PTO, Boeing predicts that, until 2044:
- Two-thirds of the new staff will cover replacements due to rotation, while a third will support commercial fleet growth
- Demand for new personnel is mainly driven by single-aisle aircraft.
- As in previous years, Eurasia, China and North America continue to drive demand for more than half of the industry's new workforce.
- South and Southeast Asia are the fastest growing workforce regions, with hiring demand expected to more than triple.
The PTO includes these projections for industry needs up to 2044:
