Within the growth that the airline began in December 2017, with the addition of a sixth aircraft, since april 2018 Manta and Coca will be new LATAM Ecuador destinations that will be operated with Airbus A319 aircraft.

UPDATE 17/05/2018:

While the route to Manta was denied by the CNAC, the route Quito to Coca with up to 7 weekly flights was authorized as detailed:

LATAM Ecuador Quito Coca route

As could be known, the start of operations at Coca, is also subject to the authorization of the route to Manta and the increase in frequencies to Galapagos, that its approval or denial by the Council is still unknown.

UPDATE 08/05/2018:

With resolution 04/2018 from the Official Registry No.. 235, LATAM Ecuador has been denied to increase the Quito route – Manta – Quito with up to seven weekly frequencies as detailed:

LATAM Ecuador Quito Manta route

The main cause detailed in the Resolution is the Principles of Aeronautical Policy, where it is established that for the increment of a certain route, one of the parameters to be considered is that the occupancy rates are higher than seventy percent of the annual average, This is an essential parameter for a new route to be authorized and during the 2017 the average occupation between Quito and Manta was 67%.

further, in the same literal h) The Resolution details that "in order to increase services on a given route, evidence of the need for the service must be reliably verified.", in such a way that it justifies avoiding unfair and ruinous competition.

With what was the arrival of a sixth plane in December, LATAM Airlines Ecuador increased the frequency of flights to Cuenca and Guayaquil from Quito, which significantly increased its offer of domestic flights in light of the prospect of growth for this new year in the country.

As part of this expected growth, also driven by new policies of the air fuel allowance and of Open skies on international flights, is that the airline has planned to grow again in Ecuador this year and has also considered the increase in the frequency of its flights to the Galapagos Islands, so the arrival of a seventh plane is imminent and would be confirmed very soon.

We exclusively consulted LATAM Airlines Ecuador about their plan to fly to Manta and Coca, and this is his answer:

“We are very interested in flying to these and other destinations”

At LATAM Airlines Ecuador we have a commitment to connectivity and tourism development in our country. As an Ecuadorian company, our desire is to contribute significantly through a programmed investment project that will give way to growth that would generate high-end jobs.

Aviation is a complex industry and the implementation of growth projects does not depend exclusively on the company, but also of other important actors.

“We are very interested in operating to these and other destinations within the country. Nevertheless, to make our investment and growth plans a reality, we depend on the agility and objectivity of the authorities. At LATAM we trust in the work we have been doing with the Ministries that make up the National Civil Aviation Council, and we hope that this will allow us to announce significant growth in domestic flights in the coming weeks.", commented Martha González, Corporate Affairs Manager of LATAM Airlines Ecuador.

The arrival of the LATAM operation to a new destination within Ecuador marks an important milestone for the integral development of a city. Being part of LATAM Airlines Group, the connectivity of a destination expands to 140 cities in 25 countries, in addition to the international network of more than a thousand destinations within the alliance oneworld.

This month of April in LATAM we fulfilled 15 years of operation in Ecuador and during this time we have consolidated our presence in the country as the Ecuadorian airline with the highest punctuality rates, standing out for technological innovations, new products and services, and high safety standards.

Flights to Manta and Coca

First-hand it was already possible to confirm the new domestic routes for this year of LATAM Ecuador. Blanket and Coca, airports that benefit from the JET A1 subsidy, They have been the first in the airline's sights to increase its presence in Ecuador.

This intention is confirmed with the request submitted by the airline to the National Civil Aviation Council – CNAC, where more details are detailed:

LATAM flights Ecuador Quito Manta

As detailed, for both routes the airline requests to operate until 7 weekly flights from Quito with Airbus A319 aircraft, A320 y Boeing 767 and the change is added based on the new operation regulation that the foreign-registered aircraft for domestic flights.

It should be noted that in Ecuador, there are few cities that have a high demand to have 3 airlines operating at the same time and you are 2 new routes are part of these. A third city like Esmeraldas would potentially be an attractive destination for airlines due to its tourism potential and the aforementioned subsidy..

Manta

The main economic and population city of the province of Manabí, which has 217.553 inhabitants and is the seventh city in population in the country (very close is the provincial capital Portoviejo that adds to the attractiveness of the route 206.682 more inhabitants), will again be a destination of the holding network. It must be remembered that in the year 2013, with the opening of the new Quito Mariscal Sucre Airport, this route was already operated at that time by LAN Ecuador with a daily flight in March 2013 and for a short period until September of that same year, Due to low occupancy and profitability, the route was canceled by the airline.

After the earthquake of 2016, in October of last year, the authorities inaugurated a new provisional terminal, which offers better services and will allow LATAM Ecuador to operate optimally in the same.

Now with new incentives and a greater growth projection for the Ecuadorian market, the flights return to the list of destinations of the airline with the following times and frequencies.

Coca

Puerto Francisco de Orellado or Coca, It is the capital of the province of Orellana and is one of the most important cities in the Ecuadorian Amazon.. Although its strength is not in the number of its population, having 40.730 population (Second place in population of the Amazon) and occupy the position 30 in Ecuador, its main attraction is in the oil business.

After the discovery of oil, The economic and population boom made this city rebound and become the center of the development of the oil boom between 1972-1992, where hundreds of workers and executives from the various oil and service companies that operate in the area fly every day.

Currently, El Coca Airport is undergoing remodeling and construction of a new passenger terminal that will leave behind the current old terminal that has served the airport practically since its initial construction..

Driven by incentives and a drop in competitor supply by Tame, El Coca will be the eighth domestic destination of LATAM Ecuador to which it will operate at the following times and frequencies.

With these 2 new routes for LATAM Airlines Ecuador, they will be already 6 the airports of the country where the 3 current Ecuadorian domestic airlines operate at the same time:

  • Quito
  • Guayaquil
  • Manta
  • Coca
  • Baltra
  • San Cristobal

  1. It's great to hear this kind of news..

I usually follow the UIO-LOH-UIO route, and it would be good if LATAM or Avianca show interest in operating this route, because with TAME it really is sometimes tricky to fly, nbecause it is not known if they cancel the last minute flight or what equipment will be used.

When I have flown with the Embraer 190 from TAME it's a nice ride, but when they occupy the ATR42-500 the trip is really a nightmare. I understand that the Loja Airport can already receive A319 and A320 equipment on its runways, which are the ones that Avianca and LATAM operate

    1. Hello July, the runway can receive the A319 or A320, but these cannot operate at their maximum capacity, they would operate with passenger restriction, therefore neither Tame nor the others 2 they have flown with those planes, since flying without all the passengers, It's not profitable.

  2. Dear Nicholas, What happened to the LATAM flights?, towards Manta and Coca, We are going towards the end of May and we still do not see any upcoming advertising, please can you update us on how this process is going?? Thanks

  3. Well done by Latam… And that we still do not know the surprises that will present to prefer them. From now on, greater confidence in a safe flight!

    1. It is because the Airbus A319 aircraft that operate cannot operate in Loja due to performance restrictions in certain cases of operation. For this very reason, Tame only flies with the Embraer 190.

  4. Strongly agree, The development of these and other Amazonian cities with their airports depends a lot on government policies., the income of its inhabitants, tourism and investment in infrastructure. Both cities are heavily dependent on oil.

  5. It is true, Nicolás, that the Coca terminal will be new, however this airport does not have expansion capacity compared to Lago Agrio, the track is shorter and without a taxiway. Instead, Lago Agrio's is larger and there is room to grow and receive larger capacity aircraft.

the future, El Coca will need another airport if it continues its current growth.

  6. It is good news that the number of planes is increased to stimulate the development of economically less developed cities such as Coca. It would be good to stimulate trips to Lago Agrio also by having an airport with better characteristics than El Coca. Manta is a much more international city and I'm glad there are more flights.

I hope the ticket prices go down., airport taxes and others make it difficult for there to be more demand from potential passengers.
