LATAM Airlines Group announced that it has reached an agreement with oneworld his withdrawal from the alliance as of 1 May 2020.

In a new press release, the airline informed about its departure from oneworld, as well as updated the status of the progress of its agreement with Delta Air Lines:

From 1 May 2020, LATAM will maintain its existing bilateral agreements with most oneworld members (British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and SriLankan Airlines), and will continue to offer the following benefits to its customers:

  • Flight purchases via latam.com and the websites of airlines associated with more than 1.000 destinations worldwide.
  • Accumulation and redemption of frequent flyer miles through the respective loyalty programs.
  • Reciprocal access to VIP lounges, subject to final agreement with each airline.
  • Higher level recognition in the respective frequent flyer programs, subject to final agreement with each airline.

*The above is not valid for Royal Air Maroc, which will join oneworld from 1 april 2020.

Termination of frequent flyer agreement with American Airlines

With the departure of LATAM from oneworld, the airline group will terminate its frequent flyer and reciprocal access to VIP lounge agreements with American Airlines. From 1 May 2020, LATAM Pass members will not earn or redeem miles on American Airlines flights, nor will they be able to access the American Airlines VIP lounges. Nevertheless, LATAM will honor all tickets on American Airlines flights that have been redeemed with LATAM Pass miles prior to the 1 May 2020, for until 12 months after this date.

What's more, LATAM will continue to respect the accumulation of miles, out of frequent flyer agreement, for LATAM Pass members who have purchased tickets on American Airlines flights prior to the 1 May 2020, for until 12 months after this date.

Advances in the LATAM-Delta agreement

From 1 February of 2020, LATAM will move its operations to the John F.. Kennedy (New York) from Terminal 8 al Terminal 4, where Delta operates more than 90 destinations in the United States, Canada and the world, facilitating smoother connections between LATAM and Delta flights. Regulatory approval has been received by authorities in the United States and Colombia for the codeshares announced in December 2019 between Delta and LATAM Airlines Peru, LATAM Airlines Colombia y LATAM Airlines Ecuador, respectively. LATAM affiliates in Brazil and Chile also plan to establish codeshare agreements with Delta during the year 2020. in parallel, LATAM is negotiating agreements with Delta to establish reciprocal access to VIP lounges and frequent flyer benefits, what is expected to materialize during the first semester of 2020.

These changes are part of the ongoing work to implement the agreement announced by LATAM and Delta in September 2019, which includes a proposal for a strategic alliance to combine their highly complementary destination networks, providing customers with a seamless travel experience and greater connectivity to more than 435 destinations around the world, subject to government and regulatory approvals.

    This only benefits Delta as it has benefited from other alliances and the abuses they have committed with Aeromexico and its staff.
