Boeing announced that it will start converting the Boeing 737-800 to freighters in Costa Rica in collaboration with the company COOPESA.

As markets and e-commerce continue to drive strong demand for production and converted freighters, Boeing announced a new partnership with a maintenance provider, repair and overhaul (MRO) based in Costa Rica to create additional converting capacity for the 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter.

Boeing will open two conversion lines to 737-800BCF with the Cooperativa Autogestionaria de Servicios Aeroindustriales (COOPESA) in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The first of the new converting lines is expected to open in early 2022.

Boeing anticipates that it will take 1.500 freighter conversions over the next 20 years to meet the growing demand. From them, 1.080 will be standard conversions, with almost the 30% of that demand coming from North America and Latin America.

“COOPESA has demonstrated the technical expertise and commitment to quality and execution necessary to help us meet growing customer demand for the 737-800BCF., even in the Americas”, Jens Steinhagen said, Director of Boeing Freighter Conversions.

Currently, Boeing converted airliners 737-800 on freighters at three locations: Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services (BSAS) a Shanghai, China; Guangzhou Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Company Limited (GAMECO) en Guangzhou, China; y Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. (STAECO) en Jinan, China.

“We are honored that Boeing has chosen COOPESA as a strategic partner to provide conversion services for the 737-800BCF”, dijo Kenneth Waugh, COOPESA CEO.

Till the date, the 737-800BCF has earned more than 180 requests and commitments 15 clients on four continents. In March, Boeing delivered the 737-800BCF number 50 since it entered service 2018.
