The 1 from December to 2021, United operated a record-breaking flight that will serve as a turning point in the industry's effort to combat climate change:
For the first time in aviation history, a commercial airline flew a plane with its full passenger capacity, using aviation fuel 100% sustainable (PURE).
The same day, announced the second round of corporate participants in our Eco-Skies AllianceSM program to collectively contribute to the purchase of SAF.
The demonstration flight, scheduled to take off with more than 100 passengers from Chicago O'Hare and land at Reagan Washington National Airport, DC, took place in a new 737 MAX 8 and used more than 1800 liters of SAF in one engine and the same amount of conventional fuel in the other engine to further demonstrate that there are no operational differences between the two and to set the stage for more scalable uses of SAF by all airlines in the future.
Currently, Airlines can only use a maximum of 50% of SAF on board. The SAF used on this flight is ready and compatible with existing aircraft fleets.
The Eco-Skies Alliance program was launched in April 2021 and has collectively contributed to the purchase of more than 26 million liters of SAF this year alone. Including announced participants, The program has almost 30 participants, among which are companies such as DHL Global Forwarding, HP Inc. y Nike.
New entrants include:
- American Family Insurance
- Biogen
- Bolloré Logistics
- CWT
- Maersk
- Meta
- Microsoft
- Palo Alto Networks
- Salesforce
- Visa
- Yusen Logistics
- Zurich North America
This SAF flight and the new Eco-Skies Alliance participants are among the most recent achievements towards the goal of United of being 100% ecological by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a 100% for 2050, without relying on traditional carbon offsets.

It is incredible that these changes are taking place., Honestly, I was a little surprised to see the name of Microsoft and other companies since I didn't think they would get involved in sustainable aviation.. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to board a United flight and then find out that you were making history., I hope aviation continues on this good path for the good of all.. By the way, I'm from Cuencano but Happy Holidays from Quito!
Thanks Joaquin!
