With two A350 flying one after another, Airbus demonstrated that fuel can be saved and CO2 emissions reduced with the fello'fly program. Airbus press photo

Airbus has performed the first long-distance formation flight demonstration in transatlantic airspace with two aircraft A350 who flew at a distance of three kilometers from each other from Toulouse, France toward Montreal, Canada. The aircraft were received at the Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.

With this flight they saved more than 6 tons of emissions CO2 on the journey, confirming the potential of more than one 5% fuel savings on long-haul flights.

El vuelo de prueba de «demostración final» tuvo lugar el 9 November 2021 with two A350 test aircraft, MSN1 y MSN59, the first as a lead aircraft and the second as a follower. This was possible thanks to the flight control systems developed by Airbus that position the follower aircraft safely in the wake of the leading aircraft updraft, allowing you to reduce engine thrust and reduce fuel consumption. A similar principle can be observed with large migratory birds, like geese, that fly together in a distinct V-shaped formation.

Pilots from Airbus partner airlines SAS Scandinavian Airlines and Frenchbee witnessed the transatlantic flight on board as observers. The flight was possible thanks to Airbus and its management partners air traffic and navigation service providers (DSNA, NATS, NAV CANADA, Eurocontrol and IAA), with the support of the DGAC, who together demonstrated that wake energy recovery flight technology harnessed in flight fello’fly can be achieved without compromising security.

The demonstration also shows how fello'fly operations could significantly boost the environmental performance of commercial aircraft and contribute to decarbonization of the aviation industry in the immediate term.

The next step is to obtain the support of the authorities so that this new operating concept can be certified and, as a last resort, enable airlines to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

  1. It's good to see how they care about the environment and I hope they can achieve great things for our planet, Aviation is not the means of transport that pollutes the most, but it is good to continue improving in this area because there is still a lot to improve for aviation to be sustainable.. Interesting post thanks for giving us the information
