LATAM Airlines will upgrade its A320 Family fleet with descent profile optimization functionality (DPO) from Airbus, generating millions of savings.

This update in the Flight Management System database (FMS) will take place in more than 200 of its A320 family fleet, becoming the largest fleet of Airbus equipped with this powerful fuel saving solution.

All equipment kits required for the installation of DPO performance software on the A320 Family fleet of LATAM will start shipping from the end of 2021 until the beginning of 2022.

best descent, more savings

The DPO function allows the aircraft to descend from cruise altitude using only engine thrust at idle, which reduces fuel consumption and generates proportional reductions in CO2 and NOx (nitrogen oxide emissions). To further improve fuel reduction, the DPO maximizes the time spent at an efficient cruising level, by not starting the descent too early, and subsequently minimizing the amount of time spent in a ‘leveling out’ stage’ inefficient at bottom of descent, and when the aircraft's engines generate thrust to maintain level flight before final approach to landing.

Aircraft flight path optimization is one of the key factors to further improve efficiency in cooperation with the Air Traffic Control. Optimizing aircraft descent paths and reducing fuel flow to the engines - coming from the lower 'idle' thrust’ during the descent phase- thanks to the DPO function, LATAM Airlines will generate more than 100 tons of fuel savings per year per aircraft. throughout your network, including restricted airports such as Lima, Santiago and Sao Paulo. This will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 300 tons per year per aircraft, which represents a significant contribution to more sustainable flight operations with 60,000 tons of CO2 each year for the entire LATAM Airlines A320 Family fleet.

DPO is one of several flight operations optimization solutions offered Airbus and its flight operations services subsidiary Navblue. Along with improved air traffic management, these fuel-saving solutions allow operators to start the decarbonization aviation.

  1. Excellent that LATAM joins the number of airlines that reduce their impact on the environment by increasing the energy efficiency of their operations.
Maybe some detail escapes me but I don't see how they eliminate 60k tons of carbon while saving 20k tons of fuel. Including the cradle-coffin analysis (extraction, distillation, transport, etc.) sounds pretty optimistic. positive in any case.

  2. Hello there…I was reading an article about the pressure and the air that is breathed in an airplane…oxygen .etc…and suddenly it disappeared from my screen... A very interesting item and I would like to continue reading it... but unfortunately I lost it…Is it possible to recover it somehow???
