The first week of January 2023 started with good news, supply has been restarted combustible aircraft Jet A1 to commercial passenger flights in Cuenca.

We start this new year with positive news for Ecuadorian national aviation. This time I moved to the city of basin to be present at the first fuel supply after two years that took place at the Mariscal La Mar Airport.

Thanks to the invitation of FAYTA Aerocombustibles, company responsible for fuel supply at this air terminal, I was able to witness this important milestone that will considerably improve the operation of the two airlines that operate here.

Fueling

Last March, the official ceremony was held at the facilities of the Cuenca Airport with authorities and guests, where the technical capacity that this air terminal was recovering was shown. It was in March 2021, in full pandemic, that Ecuafuel closed its activities in this and other airports in Ecuador, thus leaving without supply to the airports managed by the DGAC and the municipal airport of Cuenca.

I was able to be inside the supply tanker in this first operation, so I have prepared this different Aero Reportage (don't forget to comment, share and subscribe channel):

After having complied with the requirements of the local regulation and control authority, which required the Ecuadorian company to carry out exhaustive tank recovery work, tankers and facilities following updated standards for fuel distribution, the service was ready for the next stage.

This implied extensive work in conjunction with the airlines, which carried out a strict audit to ensure that the processes, equipment and personnel adapt to quality standards, security and service that each of them requires for their daily operations.

Satisfactory completion of all processes, the first week of January of this year a plane of Avianca Ecuador on a scheduled passenger flight on the route Cuenca to Quito was the first to be re-supplied with Jet A1, that it is worth remembering account in this terminal with the benefit of subsidy of 40%.

Operational benefits of supplying in Cuenca

Beyond the Jet A1 subsidy that this airport has, airlines that use this option again for their operations will also see these improvements in their operations, making an important difference to carrying out a tankering operation (load fuel both for the outward flight and for the return flight):

  • It allows airlines to leave the airport of origin with what is necessary for one way and no longer for both sections as was done in the last two years.
  • Improvement in its profitability in the operation by reducing the weight of fuel in the two sections and giving more room to weight for passengers and/or cargo.
  • Before a closure of the destination airport, You can return to Cuenca without having to go to another alternate airport, this diversion increases operating costs.
    • Example: a flight from Cuenca to Quito had to be diverted to Guayaquil due to the closure of Mariscal Sucre, but he could have returned to Cuenca to wait for better conditions and resupply with subsidized fuel.

We hope that with this new strengthening of the airport, current airlines increase their frequencies, explore new routes and also encourage the arrival of new airlines.
