Good April globally

The International Air Transport Association (THERE IT IS) released data on global passenger demand for April 2024, showing continued growth in industry recovery:

  • Total demand increased by 11,0% compared to April 2023. This translates into a greater number of passengers traveling around the world..
  • International demand grew at a faster pace (15,8%) that domestic demand (4,0%). This indicates a sharp increase in international travel, which could be due to further easing of travel restrictions and strong pent-up demand.
  • Overall load factor hit two-year high, arriving at 82,4%. This means that planes fly fuller, which is a positive sign for airlines.

Regional breakdown

Asia-Pacific airlines lead the way with increased 32,1% in international demand, driven by traffic from the Middle East and Africa. This region has benefited from the reopening of borders and the easing of travel restrictions in several countries.

  • Europe experienced growth 10,1%, exceeding pre-pandemic levels on routes to all regions except Africa. Air traffic in Europe is close to normal, although travel to Africa has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.
  • Latin America recorded the highest load factor (84,1%) with an increase of 14,5% on the demand. Demand in this region has been strong and constant, driven by a recovering economy and increased leisure travel.

All regions showed positive growth in international demand, indicating a widespread recovery of the air travel market.

  • Capacity growth kept pace with demand growth, indicating a healthy market. Airlines are adding capacity to meet growing demand, avoiding a shortage of seats and keeping prices competitive.
  • Domestic demand in China moderated after the end of the festive period. It is normal for demand to fluctuate after periods of high demand travel, and the Chinese market is expected to recover in the coming months.

Usually, April figures 2024 of IATA indicate a positive trend in the aviation industry, with a strong increase in international demand, a healthy load factor and a balance between supply and demand. The news is encouraging for travelers, as they can expect to find more flight options and competitive prices as the industry continues its recovery.
