The city of New York It is known for being an expensive tourist destination, but it doesn't have to be that way. The official tourism promotion organization of the city, NYC Tourism + Conventions, has announced a selection of free and affordable activities for you to enjoy this summer. What's more, have launched a new content hub called “NYC on a Budget” on their website, where you will find a complete guide to seasonal events, outdoor activities, cheap eating options, tips for getting discount tickets and much more.
Plans in New York without spending so much
- Free museums: Take shelter from the heat and admire world-class art at one of the city's many museums this summer. Check out NYC Tourism's Free Museums guide for a complete list of cultural institutions that are always free, free on certain days of the week or free during certain hours.
- Outdoor concerts: Enjoy live music all summer long with SummerStage. Dozens of free and paid concerts will take place in parks in all districts, including Manhattan's iconic Central Park.
- Summer for the City: This free event returns to Lincoln Center with more than 200 events, including musical story sessions for children, movie screenings, comedia stand-up, workshops, performances and much more.
- Public art exhibition: As part of the celebration of its 20th anniversary, Madison Square Park Offers a Variety of Free Public Art by Four Artists. This summer’s exhibition is “Seed” by New Mexico artist Rose B. Simpsons, which will be on display until 22 of September.
- movie nights: Enjoy free movie screenings this summer at Paramount+ Movie Nights in Brooklyn. There will be weekly events at McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Long Meadow en Prospect Park, Coney Island Beach y Fort Greene Park. Register online to confirm your spot and enjoy free popcorn.
Annual events and celebrations
- Juneteenth: NYC will celebrate Juneteenth next month, commemorating the 19 June 1865, when the last enslaved people of African descent in the United States were freed. You can learn more through Juneteenth at NYPL, a series of events, free books and resources, including the Schomburg Center Outdoor Literary Festival in Harlem on 17 of June.
- New York City Pride: Celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride in the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement with events in all five boroughs and the NYC Pride March, one of the largest Pride parades in the world, that will take place 30 of June. Visitors can also visit the new Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, that will open the 28 of June.
- Fireworks of the 4 July Macy's: Enjoy Macy's Free Fireworks on 4 of July, that will be launched over the Hudson River. Official viewing points will be announced soon. Alternatively, Head to Coney Island for their iconic Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, the boardwalk and attractions.
- Harlem Week: Harlem Week celebration 50 years this summer. Of the 7 al 18 of August, celebrate the neighborhood's rich heritage with live music, performances, gastronomy and much more.
Sports and outdoor activities
- ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup: Cricket fans will be able to watch matches on a free giant screen at Lower Manhattan's North Oculus Plaza during next month's ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup. There will be 10 match days with important confrontations, including Australia vs. England the 8 of June, India vs. Pakistan 9 June and the final 29 of June.
- soccer tournaments: Some of the best national soccer teams in the world will compete this summer in the CONMEBOL Copa América and UEFA EURO tournaments. If you cannot attend in person, The matches will be broadcast on giant screens in various locations around the city..
- Open Streets: Open Streets returns with more than 130 car-free locations in all five boroughs, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy more public space. Details about this year's Summer Streets program will be announced soon.
