United Airlines announced the next phase of its long-term plan with the addition of more than 250 planes in the next 2 years and "bed" seats in economy class, Relax Row.
The airline expects to receive more than 250 new aircraft for April 2028 —the most for any airline in a two-year period—to further modernize its fleet, add new aircraft variants, create a new experience for transcontinental travelers and introduce new onboard products for each customer, which reinforces the position of United as a leading premium airline.
New 250 planes for United
The announcement expands on the successful and ambitious “United Next” growth strategy presented in 2021. Since then, United has added 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 237 Boeing 737 MAX and 67 Airbus A321neo, completed the 70% of its renewal plan for its main narrow aisle fleet, replaced more than 100 regional airliners with larger main fleet aircraft, increased by a 40% premium seats per departure in North America and hired more than 60,000 people.
- United is integrating wide-cabin experiences on its new narrow-aisle aircraft: the new subfleet “Coastliner” Airbus A321 and the A321XLR They are United's first narrow-aisle planes with the new interior Elevated and they have a new fully reclining seat in United PolarisSM with direct aisle access and a patented design that offers more elbow and shoulder room, plus lower suite walls that protect privacy while maintaining an open feel to the cabin. United will add 100 of these new aircraft to its fleet to replace 40 Boeing 757 older and less efficient.
- The Coastliner will feature a special exterior design and will fly exclusively between United's West Coast hubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles to Newark/New York, introducing the United Polaris cabin experienceSM to domestic travelers. For the first time, customers traveling on United PolarisSM On these routes you will also be able to access the United Polaris LoungeSM.
- United's Airbus A321XLR offers travelers access to 32 premium seats —16 more than Boeing 757 which it replaces—and will begin flying at the end of this year.
- The CRJ450 — a reimagined and redesigned version of the CRJ200 — will connect smaller cities to the airline's hubs in Denver and Chicago starting this fall. This will be one of the most exclusive regional aircraft in United, by having a spacious United First cabinSM that includes a large luggage closet instead of overhead compartments, creating an open, luxurious environment unparalleled in regional commercial aviation.
- The new 787-9 of United with the interior Elevated will operate international routes from 22 of April. These aircraft include the new United Polaris StudioSM: fully reclining seats with direct aisle access that are 25% wider than United Polaris standardsSM. They have privacy doors, an ottoman-style seat for companions in certain seats, exclusive food service with wine and caviar pairing, new amenity kits with commercial-sized products, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity and a huge screen 27 inches with 4K OLED resolution, the largest among US airlines.

The new aircraft that will be integrated into the fleet of United between now and April 2028 include:
- 47 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with the new interior Elevated
- 33 will feature an additional premium seating configuration
- 40 Airbus A321neo “Coastliner” from a total order of 50 aircraft.
- 28 Airbus A321XLR from a total order of 50 aircraft.
- 119 Boeing 737 MAX
- 18 Airbus A321neo
The new United Relax Row
United announced the new United Relax Row: a set of United Economy seats that transform into a sofa, offering a more comfortable option for passengers traveling in the United Economy cabin on long-haul flights. United is the first North American airline to offer this type of seat and has exclusivity in North America on this design.
This exclusive new three-row seat features individually adjustable footrests that fold flat. 90 degrees to create more sleeping space, stretch or watch a movie. United Relax Row is ideal for families traveling with young children, Solo travelers and couples looking for the convenience of United Economy with extra comfort. Passengers traveling on United Relax Row will receive additional services for their flight, like a custom mattress, a special size plush blanket, two additional pillows, a stuffed animal and a travel kit for children.
United Relax Row is expected to launch in 2027, and the airline plans to offer it in more than 200 planes Boeing 787 and 777 wide body for 2030. Seats will be located between United Economy and United Premium Plus®, and United will offer up to 12 United Relax Row sections on each plane.

- Free family seats: United is the first and only airline to offer a dynamic seating map that allows children under the age of 12 years old sit next to an adult in their group at no additional cost at the time of booking. If required, United will automatically relocate families to their preferred seats so they can travel together.
- Children's meals on board: Kids can enjoy breakfast and lunch/dinner on select United flights where free meals are served. Parents can reserve meal options for their children in advance, like french toast, chicken strips and grilled cheese sandwiches, via the United app or United.com.
- Onboard entertainment for the whole family: United has a special selection of in-flight entertainment for families, which includes classics like Bluey, Paw Patrol, Zootopia 2, Paddington in Peru and many more. Kids travel kit: Created in collaboration with Sesame Street, The United Kids Travel Kit offers interactive activities to make the travel experience fun for kids and stress-free for parents, including an Oscar the Grouch activity book, a sliding puzzle and a relaxing sensory strip.
