Today I invite you to know Tampa Bay, a city not commonly visited by those who travel to Florida, but without a doubt, worth knowing. Visit Tampa Bay's photo
When we think of Florida, The mind of most travelers automatically travels towards the brilliance of Miami or the magic of the parks Orlando. Nevertheless, after closing the intense days of coverage and industry news in the IPW 2026 a Fort Lauderdale, I decided to take the wheel for a four-hour drive to the Gulf Coast. the destiny: Tampa, a joya which is often left out of the main radar, but what is it, definitely, one of the most beautiful cities, dynamic and surprising of this state.
Driving from the East Coast was worth every minute. Tampa welcomes you with a perfect mix of historic architecture, coastal modernity and vibrant urban living that feels authentic and relaxed. What's more, its location is strategic: He left us at the gates of Crystal River, a nearby paradise that I will tell you about in a next installment, where we lived the unforgettable experience of swimming with manatees.
but today, the protagonism is for Tampa. Here I share the must-sees that marked this travel log.
Historic charm on rails: Ybor City and the free trolley
Our base for exploring began in Ybor City, the historic neighborhood that was once known as the cigar capital of the world. Walk through its brick-paved streets, surrounded by old tobacco factories converted into restaurants and shops, It's like taking a trip back in time. The presence of the famous wild roosters that walk freely on the sidewalks give it a unique color.
The best way to connect the city's past with the present is to get on the TECO Line Streetcar. This historic tram system is not only a visual delight with its perfectly maintained wooden carriages, but it is 100% free and they take you to downtown Tampa.
We got on in Ybor City and, on a nostalgic and very comfortable journey (some trains even have Wi-Fi and air conditioning), took us directly into the city center and Channelside area, connecting us efficiently to the next stops without worrying about traffic or parking.
In Tampa there are activities for all tastes
Tampa It stands out notably for its infrastructure dedicated to the conservation and exhibition of the animal world., offering immersive experiences that are at the highest global level.
The Florida Aquarium (The Florida Aquarium)
Located precisely on the tram route, in the canal district, This aquarium is a work of architectural art crowned by an immense glass dome. The experience here is fantastic.; The tour is designed to follow the journey of a drop of water from Florida's freshwater springs to the depths of the open ocean. Walk under the acrylic tunnels surrounded by sharks, sea turtles and learning about their coral reef rescue programs immediately connects you to the region's marine wealth.
ZooTampa and Lowry Park
If the aquarium impresses, the city zoo is not far behind. What makes ZooTampa special is its focus on open natural environments and animal welfare. It is a beautiful space, surrounded by lush vegetation, where you can see the state's native fauna up close, including panthers Florida and black bears. One of the most moving sections is its rehabilitation center for injured manatees, a perfect preamble that prepared us emotionally for what we would experience later in Crystal River.
Other things to do in Tampa
It is a big city, but not as much as New York, it is very walkable (if you can stand the heat), there is a lot to see, walk and enjoy the landscape by the sea. There are more things to do, I leave you an additional list of recommended ones, but it will surely depend on each person's tastes.:
