Ministry of Defense and DGAC sign agreement for the use of hangars and spaces in the San Cristobal Airport in the Galapagos Islands.

In order to enhance the operations of both institutions belonging to the Ecuadorian state, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Ecuador – DGAC and the Ministry of National Defense, signed a loan contract for the use of certain spaces in the second largest airport in the Galapagos Archipelago.

The signing of this document will contribute to the fulfillment of the institutional purposes of the Ecuadorian Navy, which through this delivery will be able to develop aeronaval operations to care for the protected area of the Province of Galapagos, highly sensitive area to illegal fishing of endemic and migratory species, plus other external threats to its delicate ecosystem

In the spaces provided for the hangarage of the Ecuadorian Navy, security and maintenance actions for its aircraft will be carried out., where the construction of a taxiway or taxi way is planned to provide connectivity to the hangar directly with the landing strip for an expeditious operation without further delays.

On the contrary, the Civil Aviation Directorate will receive 71 hectares for the development of the Airport Master Plan and thus maintain optimal levels of safety and operational quality in this airport managed by the same Ecuadorian aeronautical authority, second gateway to the country's main tourist attraction.

Surveillance

These surveillance tasks that the Navy has been carrying out for many years from the San Cristóbal Airport seek to be strengthened in the face of the growing dawn of the international fishing fleet..

Too, this agreement could be (there is no confirmed information yet) within the framework of a possible agreement with the United States to donate an airplane P-3 Orion for this type of mission and additionally, fight against drug trafficking.
