Norwegian airline Norse Atlantic Airways, has achieved a historic milestone in the history of aviation: the first landing of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in the antarctica.

The event took place on Wednesday 15 November 2023 at 02:01 local time at Troll Airfield (QAT) from antarctica.

The mission, led by Norse Atlantic Airways and contracted by the Norwegian Polar Institute and Aircontact, Scandinavia's largest and most important flight charter company, transported essential research equipment and scientists to the remote Troll research airfield on Queen Maud Land, antarctica.

On board flight N0787 they traveled 45 passengers, including scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute and other countries, who were heading to different stations in the antarctica. The flight also carried 12 tons of research equipment essential for Antarctic exploration.

The Dreamliner left Oslo on 13 November and made a stopover in Cape Town, South Africa, before undertaking the challenging Antarctic stretch. The plane took off from Cape Town at 23:03 Wednesday and spent more than 40 hours in South Africa before its historic landing at Troll airfield.

Bjørn Tore Larsen, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, expressed his immense pride and honor for having achieved this historic milestone: «It is a great honor and emotion for the entire Norse team to have achieved together this momentous moment of landing the first 787 Dreamliner. In the spirit of exploration, We are proud to play a role in this important and unique mission. It is a true testament to our highly trained and experienced pilots and crew., and our latest generation Boeing airplanes".

The antarctica lacks conventional asphalt tracks; Thus, Norse Atlantic Airways landed on a blue ice runway, from 3.000 meters long and 60 meters wide, at Troll Airfield. The Norwegian Polar Institute operates the research station located in Jutulsessen, in Queen Maud Land, to some 235 kilometers from Troll airfield.

This historic milestone is an example of the capabilities of the fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner of Norse Atlantic Airways and its commitment to exploration. The airline plans to make more flights to Antarctica in the future, which will facilitate scientific research and tourism in the world's southernmost continent.

Some additional mission details:

  • Flight N0787 lasted 4 hours and 58 minutes.
  • The flight crew consisted of 12 people.
  • The temperature at Troll airfield was -20 degrees Celsius.
  • The height of Troll airfield is 1.200 meters above sea level.
