The airline KLM Cargo reported that it is ready with its fleet for the massive transport of the vaccine worldwide.

From the third week of March 2020, Air France KLM Martinair Cargo has done everything possible to maintain its global air cargo network, to guarantee vital supply chains. This has always been essential, but much more since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, contributing to health centers, as well as the citizens, have access to medication, medical equipments, personal protective equipment (PPE) and other critical products. In recent months, Air France KLM Martinair Cargo has carried out approximately 6.000 cargo flights and, at the moment, operates at more than 100 long distance destinations.

One of the next logistical challenges will be the worldwide distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, after the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, together with its German partner BioNTech, announced great success in the first interim analysis of the phase III study of its vaccine candidate Covid-19.

in terms of volume, the distribution of the vaccines will be an unprecedented logistical operation. Initial expectations indicate that around 15.000 millions of vaccines will have to be distributed worldwide. Many of them will also have to be distributed at very low temperatures.. Pfizer's vaccine must be kept frozen (a -70 degrees Celsius). Others will need to be distributed at a constant temperature between +2 and +8 Celsius degrees. This means that logistics solutions will be essential to maintain quality throughout the vaccine distribution chain..

Distribution of Covid-19 vaccines poses specific challenges in terms of volume, transportation and security requirements. In order to be fully prepared for this, we created the covid-19 vaccine task force four months ago. This working group represents all relevant departments of Air France KLM Martinair Cargo.

El Vicepresidente Ejecutivo de Air France-KLM Cargo Adriaan den Heijer añadió «Creemos que la cooperación y la creación de comunidades en torno a la próxima distribución mundial de vacunas son esenciales. We have established partnerships with many of the parts of the supply chain, including carriers, road transport companies, container providers, airports, freight/logistics associates, pharmaceutical companies and health care related institutes and authorities. Estamos convencidos de que una fuerte cooperación entre los asociados será esencial para ejecutar con éxito este desafío logístico»

IATA itself indicated that it will need more than 8.000 planes for the enormous logistics that will take the transfer of the vaccine to all corners of the world.
