The group LATAM announced its strategy that will make it a zero-waste-to-landfill airline by 2027 and it will be neutral carbon al 2050.

be carbon neutral 2050, zero waste to landfill 2027 and protect iconic ecosystems in South America, are some of the commitments that are part of the Sustainability Strategy of the LATAM group, which was released last 5 of May, day of anniversary of the start of operations as LATAM Airlines.

“We are facing a critical moment in human history., with a serious climate crisis and a pandemic that has changed our society. Today it is not enough to do the usual. As a group we have the responsibility to go further in the search for collective solutions. We want to be an actor that promotes social development, environmental and economic environment of the region, for this reason we are assuming a commitment that seeks to contribute to the conservation of ecosystems and the well-being of the people of South America, making it a better place for everyone”, Robert Alvo said, CEO de LATAM Airlines Group.

One of the big announcements of the day was the first phase of a collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to plan conservation and reforestation actions in iconic ecosystems of the region. TNC is a global environmental organization that works based on science, creating solutions to our planet's most pressing challenges so that nature and people can thrive together.

A strategy for the next 30 years

The sustainability strategy for the next 30 years includes four pillars of work: environmental management, climate change, circular economy and shared value. The lines of action were designed in collaboration with experts and environmental organizations throughout the region.

Regarding the climate change pillar, the group announced that it will work to reduce its emissions by incorporating sustainable fuels and new aviation technologies that, it is estimated, will be available from 2035.

By developing a portfolio of conservation projects, among other initiatives, the LATAM group will seek to compensate for the 50% of domestic emissions per year 2030, establishing a path to be carbon neutral by 2050. It will intervene in iconic ecosystems of South America such as the Amazon, the Chaco, the plains of the Orinoco, the Atlantic forest and the Cerrado, among others.

What's more, the group LATAM will promote a program that will allow passengers, corporate and cargo customers the option to offset the CO2 emissions associated with their trips. in parallel, the group will offset the same amount of CO2 emissions as customers under the program 1+1.

In circular economy, the LATAM group committed to promoting a culture of elimination, reduction, reuse and recycling throughout the operation in order to reach the 2027 as a group that generates zero waste to landfill. For it, Single-use plastics will be removed before 2023 and the on-board recycling program will be expanded on all domestic routes of the LATAM group, and all LATAM lounges will be transformed into 100% sustainable. Similarly, the group is going to implement a uniform recycling program in all countries and a plan to replace materials on board with compostable items, recyclable or certified.

For his part, in the shared value pillar, the group will expand its capacity to transport cargo and people for health programs, natural disasters and care for the environment. It should be remembered that since the pandemic began, thanks to the program Solidarity Plane, have been transported more than 29,4 million vaccines for free in its subsidiaries, more of 1.400 healthcare professionals, on 490 tons of medical supplies and more than 1.500 organs and tissues in South America. At the same time, the program has finalized 10 stem cell transports for blood cancer patients.

And in the case of environmental management, the group LATAM will implement a system, transparent and auditable, that will allow you to keep in mind the environmental variables in all the group's processes, which will have environmental certification (IEnvA) throughout your operation, a benchmark in the industry, and which is granted by the International Air Transport Association (THERE IT IS).
