The Quito airport became the first carbon neutral international terminal in Latin America and the second in the region after Baltra, Galapagos.

Ecuador continues to lead in the region counting on the most environmentally friendly airports, Quito is already the first carbon neutral international terminal and Baltra in Galapagos was the first in Latin America to achieve this important milestone.

Quiport S.A Corporation, dealer of Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport continuing with its continuous improvement tasks, extensions and implementation of actions that allow the airport to stand out worldwide, achieved the level Neutrality Awarded by the Airport Carbon Accreditation – ACA.

This certification positions Quito Airport as one of the 54 airports that have achieved this accreditation worldwide, which represent the 9.9% of global passenger traffic.

In this way, it is the first international airport in Ecuador and in the entire Latin American and Caribbean region to reach this level of maturity in the responsible management of its carbon footprint..

Neutrality

To achieve this rating, The airport had to go through a series of process improvements and implement environmental remediation measures:

Carbon neutrality is when net carbon dioxide emissions for an entire year are zero (that is to say, the airport absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide it produces). Achieving carbon neutrality for an airport is almost impossible in all cases without external help.. For this reason, The airports, among many other industries, see carbon offsetting as the final part of the solution.

Carbon offsetting is providing funds or resources to other projects that reduce carbon dioxide to offset emissions that one cannot eliminate through the normal course of business., in this case the airport operation. For instance, an airport could pay for a wind power installation that replaces a coal-fired power plant.

Quiport offsets its direct emissions by purchasing certified carbon credits from sustainable projects. The project selected for the purchase of bonds is the MANOA REDD+, which consists of the conservation of a forest of 74 000 hectares located in the state of Rondonia, Brazil, whose biodiversity is threatened by deforestation and wood theft.
