The Spanish airline Iberia works to achieve a more sustainable aviation with the AVIATOR Project, funded by the Horizon Program 2020 of the European Union (EU).

During the past week tests have been carried out on an airplane Airbus A340-600 from Iberia at the Ciudad Real airport dedicated to analyzing the impact of aviation emissions on the air quality of the airports and the surroundings, keep going

INTA experts, coordinator of the consortium that makes up AVIATOR, and other companies and institutions carried out various measurements of particle emissions, volatile organic compounds and gases (dioxide carbon and oxides of nitrogen and sulfur), among others, derived from the operation of conventional aviation engines.

The AVIATOR project achieved the highest score awarded by the Executive Agency for Innovation and Networks more than two years ago, which allowed it to obtain EU funding within the Horizon Social Challenges 2020 (Sustainable transport, health and Environmental impact).

Other key objectives of AVIATOR are to develop low-cost sensors to determine ultrafine particles., measure emissions based on weather conditions (for which work will be done in different European airports, among them the one of Madrid) and develop models that allow studying the real microphysics that occurs in the emission of a combustion engine.

“The AVIATOR project was born from INTA's commitment to research and the search for new methods and technologies that allow a more complete characterization of emissions from aviation engines.. The results obtained in the AVIATOR measurement campaigns will contribute to the implementation of new regulations that lead to a more sustainable aviation and better air quality”, affirms Jesús Maellas Benito, Head of the Energy and Environment Department of INTA.

For his part, Teresa Parejo, Director of Sustainability Iberia, notes that:

“aviation faces the great challenge of decarbonization and for this we believe that it is essential to make a clear commitment, determined and ambitious for research, to ensure long-term sustainable aviation. We participate in the AVIATOR project with the aim of better understanding the impact that aviation has on air quality, both when using fossil and sustainable fuels”.
