Iberia 75 years in Latin America

Iberia celebrates the 75th anniversary of its flights with Latin America, its main market and on which it has developed its entire strategy in recent years, providing a true air bridge between Europe and Latin America, and turning Madrid into the main gateway from Latin America to the old continent.

History

Was the 22 September 1946 when an Iberia DC-4 departed from Madrid's Barajas airport (although without paying passengers and alone 28 people among guests, airline staff and authorities), heading to Buenos Aires, thus establishing the first regular flights between Europe and Latin America. The route of those first flights was Madrid – Villa Cisneros – Natal – Montevideo – Buenos Aires. A trip of 36 hours, including stops.

In total they were 36 flight hours and 8 days of travel that allowed us to establish the first connection from Europe with our region, to be operated each 10 days and gradually thanks to the success of the route, frequencies were increased at a price of 7.250 pesetas or some $659 dollars at the exchange rate of the time.

Since then, Iberia has operated uninterruptedly with Latin America, demonstrating their commitment in good times and not so good times.

Iberia and the pandemic

Iberia has been gradually recovering its flights with Latin America and, in the winter season, will offer more than 200 direct flights per week to 17 destinations in 15 countries of the region.

The airline has planned growth in several countries such as Mexico, Dominican Republic and Colombia especially, and has also planned more flights throughout Central America and Uruguay.

What's more, during the most complicated months of the pandemic, Iberia always maintained connectivity between Spain and Latin America and carried out more than 60 repatriation flights to Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay, facilitating the return home of thousands of people.

It has also been able to transport tons of medical supplies to this region and, more recently, vaccines to countries like El Salvador, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Montevideo, Ecuador or Peru.
