The Airbus A380 will be the aircraft in charge of testing the hydrogen engines of the future in alliance with CFM International.

The objective of the program is to test on the ground and in flight a direct combustion engine fueled by hydrogen, in preparation for the entry into service of a zero emission aircraft for 2035. The demonstration will take place in a A380 equipped with liquid hydrogen tanks prepared in Airbus in the facilities in France and Germany.

Airbus will also define the requirements of the hydrogen propulsion system, will supervise the flight tests and provide the A380 platform to test the hydrogen combustion engine in the cruise phase.

CFM International (CFM) will modify the combustion chamber, the fuel system and control system of a GE Passport turbofan to run on hydrogen. The motor, which is assembled in USA, was selected for this program due to his physical size, advanced turbo machinery and fuel flow capability. It will be mounted along the rear fuselage of the A380 to allow engine emissions, including trails, are controlled separately from those of the engines that drive the aircraft. CFM to run extensive ground test program ahead of A380 flight test.

“This is the most important step Airbus has taken to usher in a new era of hydrogen-powered flight since the introduction of our concepts. ZEROe in September 2020”, said Sabine Klauke, Airbus Technical Director.

CFM shares Airbus' ambition to deliver on the promise it made when signing the Air Transport Action Group target in October 2021 to achieve net zero carbon emissions from the aviation industry to 2050 by developing and testing the technologies needed to make aircraft a reality. zero emissions within the ambitious timeline defined.

Inside the A380 will be installed 4 hydrogen tanks.

Airbus has a long-standing relationship with CFM and its parent companies, GE Aviation y Safran Aircraft Engines y, together, partners have established an excellent track record of delivering high-performance products that meet the needs of airline customers.

This project will advance to the flight stage in the middle of this decade.

An iconic and beautiful plane, without a doubt it deserves to be a test bed in such an advance, Let's hope it arrives soon for a cleaner and more sustainable aviation, good post
