Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines, announced the signing of a Memo of understanding (MoU) intending to buy five 777-8 freighters.

The memorandum of understanding to order the freighter 777-8 will enable Ethiopian Airlines to meet growing global demand for cargo from its hub in Addis Ababa and position the airline for long-term sustainable growth.

“In keeping with our history of aviation technology leadership in Africa, we are pleased to sign this memorandum of understanding with our long-standing partner, Boeing, which will see us join a select group of launch customer airlines for the fleet. In our vision for 2035, we plan to expand our Freight & Logistics business to be one of the largest global providers of multimodal logistics across all continents. To that end, we are increasing our dedicated cargo fleet with the latest technology, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft of the 21st century».

Boeing launched the new 777-8 Freighter in January and has already made 34 firm orders for the model, featuring the advanced technology of the new 777X family and the proven performance of the 777 Market leading freighter. With a payload capacity almost identical to that of the 747-400 Freighter and an improvement of the 30 % in fuel efficiency, emissions and operating costs, the 777-8 Freighter will enable a more sustainable and profitable business for operators.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates nine Boeing 777 Freighters, that connect Africa more than 40 cargo hubs in Asia, Europe, Middle East and America. The airline's fleet also includes three 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters and a combined commercial fleet of more than 80 boeing aircraft, including the 737, 767, 787 and 777.
