THERE IT IS revealed that for him 2024 full recovery is expected airline industry at levels presented pre-pandemic during the 2019.
2024: a year we had already heard it before, but that with the passing of the months during this pandemic still far from terminal and the slow but progressive lifting of the restrictive measures allow to have a clearer idea of when the number of passengers will return to the numbers of the 2019.
With two years to go before we see the airports full again, packed flights and all the planes in the air that they were left on land during the pandemic, THERE IT IS has projected statistical data on this recovery and how the industry behaved during the 2021.
The 2024 the airline industry will recover
The International Air Transport Association (THERE IT IS) expects the total number of travelers to reach 4000 million in 2024, surpassing previous levels COVID-19 (103 % of the total of 2019).
Expectations about the shape of the near-term recovery have changed slightly, which reflects the evolution of the travel restriction government imposed in some markets. Nevertheless, the overall picture presented in the latest IATA long-range forecast update has not changed from what was expected in November, before variant Omicron.
The February update to the long-range forecast includes the following highlights:
- On 2021, the total number of travelers was 47% of the levels of 2019. This is expected to improve 83% on 2022, 94% on 2023, 103% on 2024 and 111% on 2025.
- On 2021, the number of international travelers was the 27% of the levels of 2019. This is expected to improve 69% on 2022, 82% on 2023, 92% on 2024 and 101% on 2025.
This is a slightly more optimistic short-term international recovery scenario compared to November 2021, based on the progressive relaxation or elimination of travel restriction in many markets.
- On 2021, the number of domestic travelers was 61 % of the levels of 2019. This is expected to improve 93% on 2022, 103% on 2023, 111% on 2024 and 118% on 2025.
The recovery in Latin America
Traffic to/from/within Latin America has been relatively resilient during the pandemic and a strong 2022, with limited travel restrictions and dynamic passenger flows within the region and to/from North America. Passenger figures for 2019 are exceeded in 2023 to Central America (102%), followed by South America in 2024 (103 %) and the Caribe on 2025 (101%).
