What are the chances of a plane crash? We review the statistics left by the 2021 and the last five years about it. Photo of @Flysky

The International Air Transport Association (THERE IT IS, for its acronym in English) published safety performance data from 2021 for the commercial airline industry showing strong improvement in several areas compared to 2020 and the five years 2017-2021.

Among the greatest indicators of security improvements we find:

  • Reductions in the total number of accidents, the total rate of accidents and fatalities.
  • IATA members and airlines in the Operational Safety Audit register (IOSA) of IATA (which includes all IATA members) experienced zero fatal accidents last year.
  • No runway/taxiway excursion accidents, for the first time in at least 15 years.

Chances of being in a plane crash

Many people experience a natural fear to fly, among the factors is the lack of knowledge of how the airline industry, loss of control of the situation, fear of heights and other factors that even generates that many of them have never been on a plane.

as has always been said, the airline industry is and will continue to be safest means of transport in the world, taking the parameters and standards higher every day than any other sector of society.

And this is demonstrated by the statistical data:

2021 2020 average of 5 years (2017-2021)
All accident rate (accidents per million flights) 1.01 (1 accident every 0.99 million flights) 1,58 (1 accident every 0,63 million flights) 1.23 (1 accident every 0.81 million flights)
All accident rate of IATA member airlines 0,44 (1 accident every 2,27 million flights) 0,77 (1 accident every 1,30 million flights) 0,72 (1 accident every 1,39 million flights)
Total accidents 26 35 44.2
Deadly accidents(i) 7 (1 throw it 6 turboprops) 5 7.4
Deaths 121 132 207
Death risk 0.23 0.13 0.14
Risk of death for IATA member airlines 0.00 0.06 0.04
Jet Hull Losses (for a million flights) 0,13 (1 serious accident every 7,7 million flights) 0,16 (1 serious accident every 6,3 million flights) 0,15 (1 serious accident every 6,7 million flights)
Turboprop hull losses (for a million flights) 1,77 (1 hull loss each 0,56 million flights) 1,59 (1 hull loss each 0,63 million flights) 1.22 (1 hull loss each 0.82 million flights)
Total flights (millions) 25.7 22.2 36.6

The overall fatality risk of 0.23 means that, on average, a person would need to take a flight every day for 10,078 years to be involved in an accident with at least one fatality.

Fatality in plane crashes

The overall increased risk of death in 2021 a 0,23 is due to the increase in fatal accidents with turboprops. There was a fatal accident involving a jet plane last year and the risk of jet fatality in 2021 it was of 0,04 per million sectors, an improvement over the average 5 years of 0,06.

For instance, in Latin America in the last two years there were no fatal accidents in the airlines of the region.

  1. Amigo: Do you have the statistics of deaths in aviation accidents during the years 2021 2022 and- 2023, in the world, compared to the number of deaths from traffic accidents , in the world, during the same years?
    Thank you very much.

actually quite interesting, I have never been afraid of flying, my first time flying in an Aerogal A319 I was the happiest child in the world, when others cried behind the plane, There was a time when I was interested in documentaries of mayday air disasters and there it scared me a little because it was small but not much more, today it seems to me the most beautiful thing there is and I get on a plane with enthusiasm. Good post
