Transportation toéreo is a fundamental sector for the economiesíace of Américh latina, contributing to the 3,5% of the regional GDP and generating 7,7 million jobs. Nevertheless, spaghettién is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions (the 3% at the global level), which represents a challengeíor for the región in the context of climate changeático.

In this way, the study «Options to decarbonize aviationón and Américh Latina in a sustainable way», carried out by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (WITH), identifies seven keys to achieve smooth transportationéreo más sustainable in Américh latina, where the first results were presented for Brazil and Chile.

The 7 study keys

During the editionón 2024 of Wings of Change organized by IATA in Santiago de Chile on a biannual basis, and in parallel with FIDAE, MIT was able to present the results of an extensive study in favor of sustainability in the regionón. I was present.

This study aims to show the scientific evidenceícurrent strategy to understand the possible paths for decarbonizationón  of aviationón and 6 países in Latinérica: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, México and Perú. Till the date, Preliminary results have been developed for Brazil and Chile.

The results are as follows:

  1. An economical engineógrowing monkey: Transportation toéreo plays a crucial role in economiesíace of Américh latina, contributing with a 3,5% of the regional GDP and generating 7,7 million jobs. It is expected that the tráI'm theéreo continúand growing in the regionón, promoting economic developmentómico and connectivity.
  2. Decarbonizing flight: A commitment to the planetAware of the environmental impact of the sector, the aerosolsílines and governments of the regionón have committed to achieving carbon neutrality for theñO 2050. aviation fuelsón sustainable (PURE) They are the main alternative to reduce emissions, y Américh Latina has great potential for her productionón thanks to its competitive advantages in biofuels and energyíthe renewable.
  3. Leading produces itón also SAF: The PAíses de Américh Latina can become lískills in productionón also SAF, not only to satisfy domestic demand but alsoén to export to global markets. To the kingsón has abundant natural resources and the necessary experience to develop and produce SAF competitively. The problem hereí lies in the fact that the estimated cost of productionón is higher than conventional jet fuel.
  4. Increase in the cost of tickets: One of the biggest challengesíos is to generate competitive SAF prices, since the current price per liter of Jet A1 is around 0.70 $/liter, while the productionón of SAF in Brazil estimates a cost for the plants between 0.90 – 1.60 $/liter. In this scenario, the ticket price will increaseá for passengers, decreasing demand and affecting connectivity and economic growthómonkey.
  5. New aircraft are key to the ésuccess: Aircraft manufacturers must expedite the development of new technologyía pointing to the hydroógeno, airplanes híbridles and planeséelectric with batteryías, this can contribute to achieving zero emissions goals, but you reverse itóto beá alta.
  6. Política pública: The governments of the regionóThey must generate and balance the impact of decarbonization measuresón that these may have in the tráI'm theéinmate and connectivity. A political frameític along with incentives to boost supply and demand, to allowán balance the cost of sustainable fuel and the substantial increase it will haveán the tickets toéprisoners.
  7. collaborateón regional: The collaborationówe do not enteríses de Américh Latina is essential to enhance the strengths of the regionón and close existing gaps. A regional approach will allowá share knowledge, technologyías and resources to move towards a futureéreo más sustainable, acting as a block there are más potential to compete against others países más developed and economicóically strong in the world.

We must act now

The seven keys identified in the MIT study represent a roadmap to achieve global transportation.éreo más sustainable in Brazil and Chile, expandable to all América Latina como líno bass. La implementationón of these measures requireá a joint effort by governments, the industry, the aerosolsílines and passengers.

It is important that all actors involved in the transportation sectoréinmate work together to implement the necessary measures to achieve safe transportation.éreo más sustainable. Governments can establish policiesípúwars that encourage the use of sustainable fuels and investmentón in new technologiesías. The industry can develop and market aircraft más efficient and sustainable fuels. The aerosolsílines can adopt práoperational ethics más efficient and offer passengers more flight optionsáare sustainable. And passengers can choose to fly by airícompanies that are committed to sustainability and offset their carbon emissions.

By working together, we can achieve transportationéreo más sustainable that benefits people and the planet, but we have to start now, due to the intentions of many governments to restrict flights, put green taxes and demás, act with time beá key to reducing the effects on connectivity.
