Today I share with you the complete guide on how to use public transportation in Toronto, Canada sea tram, metro or buses.

If you are planning a visit to Toronto, One of the most useful things you can learn is how to get around the city using its efficient public transportation system.. It is a big city, Not as much as New York and not so chaotic, So leasing Auto does not seem like a good idea, even more so because of the costs of gasoline and parking.

For me, The best way to know this city is walking, yes it is very walkable along with public transportation. Today I bring you a brief guide about the tram, the subway and the buses of Toronto.

Tram, Toronto Metro and Buses

Toronto's public transportation system is operated by the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission). It is an integrated system, Which means you can make transfers between the subway, trams and buses with a single payment within a certain period of time (Generally two hours). And yes it works, One day I went around all the transports making a single payment, incredible.

To better show you how Toronto public transportation works, I prepared this new transportation video available on my YouTube channel:

How to pay and how much does it cost??

The cost of an individual trip (single rate) It is $3.35 CAD for adults.

The most common and convenient way to pay is with a credit or debit card., In fact the passes of 1 unlimited days are gone and this is the best way to get around Toronto. Just make sure, Every time you make tap or pass your card in the entry of subway stations, tram or buses, you use the same card always, This way you will take advantage of the integrated rates and not pay twice.

You can also pay with your cell phone having previously configured your preferred card in your device's digital wallet.

Another alternative, But in the end it implies an extra expense, It is buying a prevented card at the Metro stations, In some convenience stores such as Shoppers Drug Mart, or online. Simply tap your PRESTO card on the reader when boarding the bus or tram, or when entering the subway station.

The Toronto Metro: The heart of the system

The metro from Toronto It is the fastest way to move longer distances and connect different parts of the city. It is easy to use and the stations are well signposted.

Lines: The Toronto Subway currently has these main lines:

  • Line 1 (Yonge-University): The busiest line, that goes from the north of the city, It crosses the center and then heads west.
  • Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth): It crosses the city from east to west.
  • Line 3 (Scarborough): This line is now closed and is being replaced.
  • Line 4 (Sheppard): A shorter line in the north of the city of 5 seasons.

The system has more than 75 Metro stations, with expansion plans underway.

The metro network has an extension of approximately 76.9 kilometres (47.8 miles), connecting much of the metropolitan area.

Trams (Streetcars)

The iconic trams of Toronto They are an excellent way to move around the city center and nearby neighborhoods. They operate on fixed routes along the main streets. Remember to tap your PRESTO card or credit/debit card when uploading.

This system works very well, but on some streets you will have to get up and down in the middle of the street, something I hadn't seen before, so get off carefully, Although cars and people respect the system and pedestrians a lot.

Autobuses

TTC buses complement subways and streetcars, reaching almost every corner of the city. They are ideal for shorter journeys or for reaching destinations that are not directly on a metro or tram route. Simply look for the bus stop with the TTC sign. I used Google Maps and was able to navigate the city without any problem.

I hope this guide is useful for you to get around Toronto like a local!! Public transportation in the city is safe, efficient, clean and an excellent way to explore everything Toronto has to offer.
