A new approach procedure came into operation in Quito with the main objective of reducing the effects that the wind generates on aircraft during the summer season.

Always thinking about the safety of the country's air operations, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Ecuador – DGAC together and in close collaboration with Ecuadorian domestic airlines, implemented a special procedure that will be in force during the season of summer in Quito which includes the months of June until the beginning of September.

Mainly, the airlines Tame EP, Avianca, Petroecuador and other potential, will be able to benefit from the new air traffic flow management procedure implemented to mitigate turbulence, tailwinds, wind shear, among others, that regularly occur in the dry season and affect flights in the final approach segment to the runway 36 (south head) of the Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport. The process was launched last 20 of June.

Now the aircraft coming from Cuenca, Guayaquil, Manta, Salinas, Santa Rosa and others will be able to enter through the south of the airport and then enter through the western sector of Cerro Ilaló and later, complete its final phase of flight, prior to landing at the southern head of the airport.

It should be noted that in the case of LATAM Ecuador, it does not use this procedure, since it performs a similar approximation, but of the RNAV RNP type, while the rest of the airlines after the vector guidance carried out, conclude the procedure under visual flight rules:

The mitigation measure reduces the possibility that the pilot will not be able to finish his landing due to the winds in the months of July and August. In this period there is influence of winds that come from the Amazon region, which collide with the Ilaló hill and form a kind of whirlwinds that are known as turbulence and wind shears that cause difficulties for aircraft in the final phase at the Quito airport, situation that does not affect the normal development of air operations.

It should finally be remembered, and for user peace of mind, than the whole industry, airlines, airports, controllers and pilots are highly qualified and trained to deal with extreme weather situations as well, of wind conditions.

  1. Thank you Nicolás for sharing and explaining the use of this ATS procedure implemented by the DGAC… I take the opportunity to indicate that the right thing is to mention "dry season" instead of using the term "summer season".
