ACI-LAC presents an update to its projection of air traffic development for the region of Latin America and the Caribe for this one 2020.

In the newsletter published by the organization, It was indicated that August passenger traffic at airports in Latin America and the Caribbean was a 75,8% lower than the same month of 2019. The traffic accumulated since the beginning of 2020 (January-August) has experienced a decrease in 58,3% compared to the previous year.

ACI expects that passenger traffic in 2020 closing with a reduction of between 60% and the 70% compared to 2019, which represents a loss of up to 480 million passengers, which will depend on the moment in which governments allow the resumption of air transport and the measures applied against the COVID-19.

ACI recommends that governments instead of implementing quarantines, that reduce demand, implement testing protocols as a better option.

The severe reduction in passenger traffic will have a significant impact on the airport economy. ACI hopes that in 2020 the income of the region's airports will decrease by at least 6.5 billion dollars.

There is a significant level of uncertainty around the potential traffic recovery trajectory and passenger traffic volumes are expected to reach levels of 2019 on 2023 from 2024, depending on the balance between domestic and international traffic. A faster recovery is expected in markets with higher domestic traffic compared to those with a higher proportion of international traffic.

This has been the evolution of passenger traffic at airports in Latin America and the Caribbean:

2020/2019
January 4.72%
February 7.33%
March -37.09%
April -94.96%
Mayo -94.87%
June -89.47%
July -81.67%
August -75.75%
January-August -58.27%

The outlook will only change if governments continue to allow flights to resume., along with the flexibility of the entry and exit protocols implemented.
