Delta Air Lines announced that it will incorporate 36 additional aircraft to its medium and long range fleet both Airbus What Boeing. Delta press photo.
Delta has entered into agreements to add 29 Used Boeing 737-900ER and lease seven Airbus A350-900 used as it continues to optimize and modernize its fleet. The 36 Additional aircraft will improve fuel efficiency and improve customer experience, while supporting the airline's fleet renewal strategy.
The pandemic of COVID-19 provided the opportunity to simplify the fleet of Delta and accelerate the withdrawal of 18 Boeing 777 widebody and narrowbody fleets MD-88 and MD-90, all of them older and less efficient. The pandemic also provided unique commercial opportunities to add new generation aircraft at attractive prices.
Widebody fleet renewal is critical to Delta's recovery and will help position Delta for sustained profitability and future growth. As Delta's flagship aircraft, the A350 offers a world-class customer experience, improves loading capacity, reduces unit costs and contributes to a more sustainable future.
The next generation A350 consumes 21% less fuel per seat than 777 that replace. Improving fuel efficiency is paramount to Delta's ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon emissions. The acquisition of 29 Narrowbody Boeing 737-900ER also complements Delta's existing fleet.
Delta will lease the A350s through AerCap and buy 27 of the 737-900ER to funds managed by Castlelake, L.P., while the remaining two 737-900ERs will be financed with funds also managed by Castlelake, L.P. Both transactions are subject to closing conditions..
Deliveries of the aircraft will be completed by the first quarter of 2022 and will enter service once modifications are completed.
In addition to the seven A350s that are part of this announcement, Delta currently have 15 A359 in service and 20 requests. The addition of the 29 737-900ER will bring the total to 159 in his fleet.
The agreement follows the company's decision in April to exercise options on 25 planes A321neo additional, that will begin to deliver next year, These aircraft offer the lowest seat costs in Delta's fleet.
