Iberia It is the second airline in the world that has reduced its CO2 emissions the most on long-haul flights, according to the report prepared by the independent aviation consultancy DIFFERENT.

According to this report, which carries out the annual follow-up of more than 65.000 airplanes and 35 million flights, from 2019 Iberia has reduced its CO2 emissions 17% per seat-kilometre on its long-haul flights, they are precisely, for which there is currently no more efficient alternative to air transport.

Iberia reduces its emissions

According to ATAG, air transport represents 2,1 percent of global emissions and, inside that, flights over 1.500 kilometers are the 80% of emissions, therefore, it is especially important to increase the efficiency of these routes.

The IBA report attributes this reduction of Iberia in its CO2 emissions, to the renewal of the fleet carried out by the Spanish airline and which began in 2013, with the incorporation of the first twin-engine aircraft -the Airbus A330-300- to its long-haul fleet. On 2018, began to arrive Airbus A350 and in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Iberia decided to advance the withdrawal of the Airbus A340-600, the last four-engine aircraft with which it operated its long-haul routes.

The renewal of the fleet, key in the decarbonization of the sector

According to the gradual recovery of its flight program, Iberia has resumed its aircraft delivery schedule and, in so far this year, Iberia has already received three A350s and five A320neo. The incorporation of these two models and the withdrawal of the A340 of your fleet, in summer of 2020, Significantly reduced fuel consumption. Currently, Iberia's entire long-haul fleet is made up of twin-engine aircraft (A330 y A350), which represents a reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the A340 that operated with four engines.

The model A350 It is the quietest on the market and, what's more, between one 30 and a 35 percent more efficient in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, thanks to the latest generation materials with which it is built and the advanced design of its Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

The A320neo is the most technologically advanced and efficient aircraft in the short and medium haul fleet of Iberia. Equipped with Leap-1A type CFM engines, it's a 50% quieter and between 15% and a 20% more environmentally friendly, then it emits 5.000 fewer tons of CO2 per year and a 50% less than NOx.
