LATAM implements changes in its Economy cabin and eliminates the 75% from plastics single use on board, reducing 1.200 tons of plastic.

LATAM announced changes to its Economy cabin service that allowed it to eliminate more than 1.200 tons of single use plastics, which is equivalent to delete 36 thousand plastic bottles 500 ml. The new service seeks to implement a more sustainable cabin and considers important changes in the materiality of all the elements on board (vases, cutlery, trays), replacing them with more sustainable materials like bamboo cutlery, reusable trays, kraft paper packaging for certified sustainable paper cups and cutlery.

Less plastic on flights

The initiative is already implemented in all regional and long-haul routes of the LATAM group and is part of the group's sustainability strategy, which has as one of its objectives to eliminate the 100% of single-use plastics used in its operation by 2023.

“Caring for the planet is a challenge for everyone and a necessary destiny for LATAM, this is why we review our services and identify close to 1800 tons of single-use plastic on board our international flights. A) Yes, our teams got involved to redefine all the details of the service, achieving a positive change for our clients and thus also for our planet”, says Paulo Miranda, Vice President of Clients of LATAM Airlines Group.

The proposal adds to the changes made in the cabin Premium Business that include the incorporation of reusable bags to cover the elements of rest, in addition to the new eco travel kits for passengers. Among the novelties of the new kits is the bamboo toothbrush with a sugar cane cap, wrapper for earplugs made from kraft paper and socks and eye covers made from recycled plastic.

More Circular Economy in LATAM

in addition, the group has added recycling and reuse actions. On domestic flights Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Colombia, LATAM has the program “Recycle Your Trip”, whereby cabin crew segregate plastic and cans on board. In the case of Colombia, this segregation is done on land. At the same time, together with women entrepreneurs and allied organizations, the group continues with its uniform reuse program in Ecuador, where he works hand in hand with the designer and artisan María de los Ángeles Hernandez “Maya”. The same is executed in other markets such as Chile, Colombia, Peru and Brazil, giving a second life to employee uniforms that are not being used.

These initiatives are part of the sustainability strategy of LATAM whose goals include being zero waste to landfill by 2027, reduce and compensate 50% of domestic emissions per year 2030 and achieve a neutral carbon footprint 2050.
